Why I’m Excited For Quantic Dream’s Star Wars Eclipse

Out of nowhere, we got an incredible cinematic trailer at the Game Awards 2021 by Quantic Dream, who we knew were rumored to be creating their very own Star Wars game.

Quantic Dream is known for making some unique and incredible video games such as Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain which have been huge successes for the developers.

If you haven’t played those games, well, this is where it gets interesting. In both of these games, you control 4 different characters who all have separate agendas but end up coming together eventually.

Every single decision you make matters, every dialogue choice you make matters, if you’re investigating it’s up to you how you do it and if a character dies, they die. They don’t come back. This all adds up to the ending meaning there are multiple different ways the game can end.

We know Ubisoft is creating their open-world game, Respawn is creating their Fallen Order sequel and a KOTOR remake is coming soon. It’s a great time to be a Star Wars and video game fan. It’s also beautiful to see that EA’s predatory tactics will no longer be seen within a Star Wars game. It’s also even nicer to see different developers get a chance to make a perfect Star Wars game.

Eclipse looks set in the High Republic, which is the era set prior to Star Wars Episode 1, The Phantom Menace. This does Quantic Dreams a bit more freedom when it comes to creating their own characters with fresh stories. We don’t know a lot about the events leading up to The Phantom Menace so this will definitely be interesting.

In the incredible cinematic trailer, we did stumble across a couple of characters we know, more importantly, Yoda. The Jedi were at their absolute highest at this stage so it’s likely we’ll still see prominent Jedi even if it’s just a cameo such as Mace Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, and others.

We suspect the game will follow their normal tradition of controlling 4 different characters with each one getting their own story and agenda. Very similar to Detroit itself.

What excites me more than anything is not just the story, but we as the player get to dictate how that story goes. Most RPG games have a few elements of control but it tends to be just one decision towards the end of the game that chooses the ending. With Quantic Dream’s games, each decision you make affects how the game will go. That’s why it’s so special. They’re like Telltale games on steroids.

I know there won’t be a lot of combat that we will control as a player, but mini sequences will dictate how that particular sequence will go. It adds a different element of control to the player as if you miss one button press, it could be game over for that specific character.

The reason why this doesn’t bother me as much is that we know we’ll get the full controlled combat in Ubisoft’s game and we know for a fact we’ll get it with Respawn’s Fallen Order sequel. It’s just a different game and very unique.

Quantic Dream isn’t known for predatory tactics such as microtransactions within their games which is a plus. The game you tend to get is the finished version. Detroit never came with DLC but to be honest, with how well the game was told it really didn’t need it.

Also, due to how much can change during the course of a single save, it does add replayability to the game. You can go back in and make different choices you made during the first playthrough. I’d assume a character will have the ability to either be a Sith or Jedi, and you will be able to make those choices as the game plays through.

Overall, I’m super excited. The rumors that floated around got me incredibly intrigued because Quantic Dream has made some memorable games for me. Heavy Rain and Detroit were some of the most immersive experiences I’ve ever had as a player. I have full faith they will do the same with one of the most popular IPs on the planet.

If you did miss the trailer, then don’t worry. We have you covered.
