What I Liked
1. When I read the reviews for the show, a lot of them did mention how the show is kind of its own thing and I now understand why. Naomi’s story begins differently from most superhero shows. She’s just a normal teenager with normal adoptive parents. It’s actually a nice change of pace when it comes down to hero shows. So far though it’s had an alright start.
2. At the debate Naomi does throw out quite a touching speech, something that did give me goosebumps. After the speech unfortunately she loses control in the debate due to the same thing that happened earlier in the episode where she collapsed. I have to admit here that it was some great acting from Kaci Walfall.
3. Zumbado was quite the terrifying and edgy character. As Naomi investigates the woods where Superman allegedly landed, Zumbado shows up to confront Naomi and it’s here we get our first glimpse of Naomi’s powers. I do hope this isn’t something that’s dragged out considering Naomi is not a popular character and only has comic book runs to her name at present.
What I Disliked
1. One thing I don’t like or agree with is the mythology surrounding Superman, mainly that he’s not real. It doesn’t even make sense considering in every single universe where Superman is real and normal, everybody knows who he is and what he represents. Also, I’m assuming he’s taken down multiple bad guys and helped a lot of citizens in need so surely he can’t be a myth at this stage? Surely. I understand that we don’t even know if he’s real in this show but I just don’t like it.
2. I also don’t see the point in not using Tyler’s Superman and having this show based in the same universe. It’s The CW and their continuous mistake of “separating” shows is a problem. Black Lightning had this mistake and it was canceled quickly compared to other shows. I just don’t see the point in them doing this again when despite its low ratings, the Arrowverse is still tremendously popular. I don’t see an issue with them just having it involved in the same universe, we know damn well The CW will do it later anyway. It’s a waste of time.
Favourite Moment
Quite an intriguing ending to the pilot episode. As Naomi confronts Dee at the end, he springs out these metal wings out of nowhere and tells her to ask the question. She then asks; “who am I?” Then the episode ends. I do kind of like this more due to my curiosity peaking about what to expect next. I have no idea about the character, her backstory, her powers etc so this does engage me moving forward.
Standout Character
Naomi is the obvious standout this week considering this episode was all about introducing us to her and what her personality, traits, and personal life are all about. There’s wasn’t enough from other characters just yet to truly make an impact but it’s more than understandable considering this is a pilot episode.
Verdict
Naomi has a lot of things to work through at this stage. I am a little unsure as to whether or not it has the capacity to truly succeed when other superhero shows are on top form right now, especially with Marvel, Titans, and Superman & Lois. This episode was enough to keep me intrigued as to what is coming but so far I’m not 100% convinced.
