I know we’ve reviewed Peacemaker on the website but on a personal level, this show never interested me. I enjoyed The Suicide Squad and really enjoyed what James Gunn was building. However, the Peacemaker character just didn’t do enough for me.
Fast forward a little while, I saw the show had been released on Sky in the UK so I and my wife decided to watch the first episode. Then the second, then the third. I was actually grateful I woke up seriously unwell for work so it meant I didn’t need to work and I could watch the show. Imagine being thankful for being sick?
Let me begin that what John Cena has brought to the role of Peacemaker is astounding and exceptional. I’ve always been a fan of Cena from the WWE days and I do love his incredible talent as an actor. Looking at how Cena acts in public, on social media, he literally embodies the character. You can tell he cares so much about it. This is something that passes over because now I care about the character.
It’s not just Cena that deserves all of the praise or the cast. James Gunn deserves every award possible for what he’s created with this universe. He took a series that wasn’t super well received and turned it around in such a major way. It’s impressive. Also, side note, the music in anything that James Gunn does is just so damn good! I’ve had Six Feet Under by Kissin’ Dynamite on repeat for an hour.
One of my worries before watching the show was Vigilante (Adrian Chase). This was done on The CW’s Arrow except Adrian Chase was Prometheus and Vigilante was just trash. This Vigilante was one of the best damn parts of the show! He’s hilarious, his fighting is awesome and the demeanor of the character is entertaining. I do absolutely love the relationship between him and Peacemaker.
Then there’s the other cast who all do a brilliant job in bringing this show to life. Characters such as Harcourt, Leota, and Auggie are others who are just super intriguing. Especially Harcourt and Leota.
It’s a show that’s been done with great care and attention. That’s what has surprised me the most. I’ve gone from not really caring much for a character to being one of my most enjoyable characters. Phil Weaver, the writer who reviewed the Peacemaker show was telling me for weeks that I’m missing out. I can’t even count the number of times he asked the question;
“Have you watched it yet?”
He was right in everything he said. I saw his high ratings for the show and should have listened. I’m glad I got to experience this series. I am also grateful the show has been renewed for a second season. Something I now can’t wait for.
I can’t recommend this enough. If you’re in the same boat as I was where you’re on the fence, trust me, take 40 minutes out of your day off and give the first episode a watch. There aren’t many series nowadays that truly capture the presence of excellence in the first episode.
Spoiler in this next bit.
In the finale we see the Justice League show up briefly which was not expected. Anyway here’s my reaction to that happening.
