Stargirl is one of those shows that I often forget about. It’s weird because the show itself is brilliant. It’s one of the few shows we’ve reviewed that got a perfect 10/10 across an entire season, the first.
The second season took a pretty dark, twisted new turn when it comes to The CW’s superhero range (what’s left of it now anyway). Again, the second season nailed it.
The issue is, due to how The CW market these shows, they often go under the radar. If you’re here then you’re probably asking how. Besides my inner circle regarding Comic Universe, nobody has heard of the show or the character for that matter. This is a CW issue more than the show itself. Plus, the marketing for the show since the beginning has been weak.
Season 3 is right around the corner and as usual, I have heard barely anything. There’s been next to no teasers, posters or an abundance of marketing considering the third season drops on August 31st, 2022.
I fully believe Stargirl will be on the chopping board after season 3. There are a few reasons but the most obvious one is the cancellations from The CW this year. Naomi, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman and many other shows faced the axe. The Flash is ending next year. Gotham Knights is RUMOURED to be cancelled. I highly believe that The CW may be ending its relationship with DC at this rate, and Superman and Lois could go to HBO Max.
I’ve already touched on this but the second reason is marketing. I said it already but it’s always been poor. It also doesn’t help (which has always hurt CW shows) if it only airs live in America. We in the UK for example have to wait weeks, sometimes months to see the show without finding other means to watch the show. This in turn affects the profits of the show, in turn, affects the budgets, which could ultimately lead to a worse show. Just look at the state of Supergirl’s CGI and its effects before the show was also cancelled.
Reason number 3 is the ratings themselves. Season 1 did relatively okay averaging 946,000 which isn’t far from the numbers The Flash and Superman & Lois brings in. Season 2 took quite a dip averaging 591,000. I believe due to the marketing as well, season 3 may fall even lower than that – resulting in the cancellation.
Please note, that these numbers were provided by TV Series Finale. You can season 1’s ratings by clicking here, and season 2’s ratings by clicking here.
It’s still far too early to tell if season 4 will be a go but I can’t see it happening. I believe season 3 will be the end of Stargirl and the Justice Society of America. It’s a damn shame if it is cancelled because it’s a damn fantastic show.
I’d rather the show be kept alive and go to HBO Max if it does face cancellation. I’d love to see Stargirl team up with the Titans in that universe instead.
All-in-all though, I am super excited for season 3. If you haven’t seen the trailer already then here you go;
