Please note, when you’re reading this, this is my own opinion on the shows that have been released in 2022 in a superhero/comic book setting.
We’re currently in September with only 3 months left of the year. We only expect Andor, Tales of the Jedi, and Werewolf by Night. The latter 2 are only short episodes.
These are the following shows we’ve had in 2022.
- The Book of Boba Fett
- Obi-Wan Kenobi
- Moon Knight
- Ms. Marvel
- She-Hulk
To briefly put these into my own opinions.
The Book of Boba Fett was drastically improved when Din Djarin showed up.
Obi-Wan Kenobi was my favorite show of the year although this isn’t an opinion shared by the majority of Star Wars fans.
I enjoyed Moon Knight but it wasn’t the strongest Disney+ show.
Ms. Marvel dragged on and only got good towards the end.
She-Hulk has been terrible and the CGI is awful.
There’s one huge issue at the moment. A lot of these characters have zero direction after their respective show. Boba Fett will likely be a cameo basis on The Mandalorian moving forward, with no second season announced. I have no idea where or what Moon Knight will do next. Obi-Wan can easily use a second season considering the amount of time set between Episodes 3 and 4. Ms. Marvel granted will be in The Marvels but She-Hulk, again, I have no idea. She doesn’t seem like a character that would make a difference in an Endgame-type battle anyway.
In 2021, it felt like every show Disney+ put out was fantastic. We started with WandaVision. We had The Mandalorian, Falcon & The Winter Soldier, What If…?, Hawkeye and Loki. The difference between 2021 and 2022 is astounding.
Let’s take a look at Rotten Tomatoes. Boba Fett’s show received a 66% tomatometer and a 56% audience score.
Obi-Wan Kenobi received an 82% tomatometer with a 64% audience score.
Moon Knight came in with an 86% tomatometer and a 90% audience score.
Ms. Marvel surprisingly came in top with a 97% tomatometer but only an 80% audience score.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was subject to pathetic review bombing, however, the audience score isn’t surprising. It has an 87% tomatometer and only a 39% audience score.
To put these scores into perspective, none of the 2021 Disney+ shows received anything less than 83% on any of the scores and that was only Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The rest were all around the 90% mark or above on average.
Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had some very good moments during these shows but it needs to be better. It’s a shame that there are fans out there only watching She-Hulk because they know Daredevil is about to show up. I don’t blame them either. The show’s wacky, the fourth wall breaking, the lack of action, no direction to the episodes, it’s over the top.
Even the rest of the year doesn’t look greatly over appealing. We’re being told Andor may be on par with The Mandalorian in terms of peak Star Wars content which is interesting. Tales of the Jedi and Werewolf by Night aren’t my cup of tea but I can see why people’s interest is peaked.
Last year I heard complaints about the shows but half of the complaints were really petty. This year, it seems like every show just gets blasted by the fans. I know Marvel and Star Wars, even DC have very toxic fanbases but when it’s a huge majority of people complaining, then it’s not toxic really.
People can still enjoy these shows when others don’t. Honestly, I wasn’t Moon Knight’s biggest fan but everyone around me absolutely loved it. That’s fine. I loved Obi-Wan, but a lot of people around me disliked it. Again, that’s completely fine.
Next year though does look like it’ll make up for this year. We’ve got some exciting shows coming our way. Echo, Secret Invasion, The Mandalorian season 3, Loki season 2, What If…? season 2 (maybe 2022), Ironheart, Agatha, The Bad Batch season 2, and more.
It’s why I’ll always be subscribed to Disney+. The platform and service are incredible. Even if I believe this year has been disappointing for me personally, I will still always appreciate the work Disney put into their service to ensure it remains dominant. I’ve been subbed to Disney+ since it arrived in the UK and will continue to be subscribed. I just hope that Daredevil isn’t far away so She-Hulk can ramp up the action. The CGI seriously needs a huge overhaul.
