First and foremost, rumors can be great, they are a fantastic conversation piece and over the course of my life, I’ve had conversations about many rumors from comic book-related stuff to none comic related stuff. They can be great, but recently I’ve been getting put off by them. I’ll explain why.
It’s not just about DC, you get rumors is all things, Marvel, Star Wars, and more. More recently, all I’ve been seeing are rumours started by small websites, newly-created Twitter accounts, and just really bad “scoopers” and the main topic has been DC, primarily James Gunn and Peter Safran’s timeline for DC.
I get that people need the clicks, views, and money but to consistently sit there and make up stuff that you know for a fine fact is false is just killing projects, especially big movies. For example, in Doctor Strange 2 Multiverse of Madness, I saw that movie get so much hate because a certain character did not appear because of some random Twitter account stating it would and claiming an “inside source” said so.
It had a long list of characters that were supposed to appear from Wolverine to backend Marvel characters. The same thing happened with Obi-Wan Kenobi in the series. I saw an influencer literally switch off the series because Mace Windu didn’t appear all because of a rumor started by a small website.
James Gunn is a busy man, even busier now he’s co-head of DC and WB, he’s working on projects as well as trying to put together a decent roadmap for DC that fans will love, but it’s becoming a regular thing where I will go on Twitter, scroll down and see him having to clear up or debunk a rumor. Let the man work.
Recently, it was Superman, we all know the situation with Henry Cavill, well according to a small website, James has already picked someone to be the next Superman, and he literally had to debunk it.
This rumor business with DC has got to the point where actual influencers are arguing with directors about their own movies, stating that a scene was wrong, etc.
A certain influencer argued with Cathy Yan about the story. It got to the point where Cathy had to directly say “It was my movie, I wrote it.”
I know at this current moment that doing an article about a DC project, character, or even James himself is easy, you’ll get clicks, and you’ll go around Twitter but it has to stop. It’s ruining projects.
