Today, we have the absolute pleasure of reviewing the first of a two-part comic from Ryan Little and Scott Malin. I’m super excited about this review knowing that Ryan has had the pleasure to work on What If…? and I Am Groot.
Today, we look at the first part of a two-part comic about some young bakers finding a mysterious ingredient that brings their marvelous confections to life, just as mischievous cats.
So if you like cats, food, and some incredible artwork, this comic is truly for you.
Story – 9/10
Being a cat person myself, and I love food so this mixes two of my personal likes together to truly capture a wonderful story. The story is very unique in the sense that as an avid Marvel, DC, and Boom Studios comic reader, I can’t remember if at all I’ve seen or read anything along the same lines as this new comic by Ryan Little.
The story doesn’t wait for a ton of issues before it throws you into the story, this story kicks off right away and doesn’t hold back on the fun, excitement, and mysteriousness of the story. The story does incredibly well at keeping readers informed of the present-day story, as well as dives into a flashback scene multiple times to give context to present-day issues.
I could not tell you what I expected from this story but all I can say is that it captured my attention extremely well and kept me reading page after page and I fully enjoyed it.
Graphics – 10/10
The graphics and art style of the comic are extremely well-illustrated and colorful. The art style kept a fantastic job of separating present-day art style from the flashback art style of the comic. Honestly, it took me 10 or so pages of the art style to truly know why I liked it a lot.
The art style reminded me of the early Dragon Ball art style. Simple, basic, and yet very effective to capture my eye’s attention on every single page that I read through this comic. The artist is very talented to do that.
Entertainment – 8.5/10
Honestly, while I really like the story, there were a few pages that were back-to-back where I sort of lost my entertainment. Don’t get me wrong, it was a truly great story, but this happens with nearly every comic I read. Honestly, it’s what makes a comic interesting and well-written.
It doesn’t just have everything or something happening on every page, it needs that breath of fresh air to sort of like the reader process everything that has happened beforehand.
Time – 10/10
When I read the email from Ryan, I thought I would only read the first part of the story and my reading time would only be 10-15 minutes. Ryan allowed me to read the entire series, 103 pages long. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that.
No, but seriously, it’s a fantastic read, and time flies when you dive into this story. I had a blast spending around 30 minutes reading this story.
Characters – 8/10
We got introduced to a bunch of characters throughout the story.
- Charlie
- Her mom
- Brett
- Big Rob
And a few more characters to truly flesh out the story.
Honestly, while not much about the other characters were shown, we do know some backstory on Charlie and that is she is used to living out of boxes and seemingly moving around.
Each character has a different style, I’m not talking art style but personality. Charlie is girly while Brett is a hoody-wearing character, seemingly two different worlds coming together because of one thing…baking.
Verdict
Overall a solid start to what will become a fairly decent comic run from Ryan Little. The story was unique, refreshing, and just overall different from what I typically read and that is what made this comic story fascinating. The team behind the story, writing, and art can all be proud of themselves.
