THQ Nordic has announced a brand new South Park game and this time it’s in 3D, seemingly following on from the events of the previous 2 South Park games as Cartman is back to playing the Grand Wizard instead of The Coon.
Here’s the trailer;
The 3D aspect has caused a split. You have some people who are ready for it and others who aren’t. If I am being honest, I’m not.
The trailer looked poor. The graphics look like they belong to the PS3/Xbox 360 generation. They do not look even remotely decent. The artwork needs a complete overhaul before the final release.
I never once sat there playing the previous 2 games and thought; “oh, these games would be fantastic in 3D”. Why? Because it’s South Park.
This is where I’m not sure of the direction. The previous 2 games were fantastic. They felt like pure South Park with a good story, great humour and genuinely good gameplay.
I’m a sucker for turn-based combat in any game so there’s that plus I’m a huge fan of South Park so these 2 combined made for a memorable experience for me. I do feel now this is about to change.
The first game was made by Obsidian Entertainment and the second by Ubisoft, now this game is made by THQ Nordic. It feels like there’s no stability in the game franchise developers.
I am worried that this game will go from a masterpiece to a rip-off of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare.
There’s reasons why the first 2 games were so successful. No doubt, because it’s South Park it’ll sell well regardless but will they still be held in the same high esteem? I can’t see it.
I’m sick of developers taking tried and tested games and changing them thinking they’re making moves. Sometimes, games are perfect just the way they are.
For me, I would’ve rather seen a part 2 to the superhero gig. Give us more powers to choose from, a fresh new story, make the map more prominent and there you go. There’s no need to try something new with this.
If the game is to be like Garden Warfare then create a spin-off instead. So far, I can’t say I’m excited for this at all but as always, I remain open-minded. I’ll wait for further gameplay trailers and other media before making a final conclusion.
These are just my thoughts based on the trailer we’ve got so far and I know it’s not a lot – but as a critic, I like to discuss my opinions based on these especially when the first 2 games live so close to my heart.
