Gen V “God U.” Review

Season 1 Episode 1 – “Congratulations! You have been chosen for admission to Godolkin University! We’re thrilled to be a part of your journey to discovering what kind of super you are! Since its founding in 1965, God U has produced some of the best and brightest superheroes the world has ever known, including three members of The Seven! And who knows? Maybe you’ll be next!”

What I Liked

1. The episode begins with what seemingly is a nightmare for the main character, Marie. It’s showing the TV announcement of A-Train joining the ranks of The Seven. A young Marie gets stomach pain and goes to the bathroom to realize that she’s leaking blood, she panics and falls off of the toilet, her mother rushes in and Marie’s powers is coming into effect and she can use her blood as a weapon, the blood turns into a sharp object and goes through her mother’s neck. Her father runs in and Marie screams in a panic which causes her mother to explode, killing her dad. What a bloody start.

2. This whole concept of a superhero university is very interesting. Seeing that it’s not just this simple of having powers and dipping out to fight crime is amazing. The fact that you could go to school and learn to become a hero to arguably better your life is so unique.

3. Marie is walking through campus when she gets interrupted by a hero who’s apparently running from the superhero police. Marie’s natural ability to be a hero comes into play when she uses her blood powers to trip up the kid so it gives enough time for the police to sedate him.

4. While being at the school, Emma is seemingly doing YouTube on the side. Doing fun little videos showcasing her powers, but she’s also dealing with the fact that she’s getting hate online. She’s reading hurtful comments on her videos and you can see it’s making her depressed.

5. Brinkerhoff puts the blame on Marie for the nightclub incident. He forces her to take the blame because Golden Boy and the others are going all the way. He tells her that she’s an orphan who murdered her parents so it’s easy to blame her. Golden Boy goes off the rails on campus. Marie walks in on him killing his father, Golden Boy goes to kill Marie but runs into Jordan which ends up in a fight in which Jordan loses.

6. Everyone gathers around to watch Golden Boy, who gives Andre a hug and says sorry before he uses his powers to explode in the sky, committing suicide. What an ending to the first episode.

What I Disliked

Favorite Moment

My favorite moment would be Andre trying to impress a lady in the nightclub. He uses his power to transform a coin into a glass bird and he makes a deal with the lady that if he gets it into a drink, she’ll go home with him, if not, they go dance. While doing the trick someone bumps into him causing the glass bird to hit someone in the neck. Marie uses her powers to put the lady’s blood back in and save her life.

Standout Character

I’ll give this to Marie. Seeing what she had to overcome in her life to try to prove to her sister that she is not a murderer and that she’s a hero only to become a scapegoat for Golden Boy was interesting.

Verdict

The blood, guts, and glory that The Boys series had carried over into this unique spin-off series. This series delivers a very unique way of showcasing what young people with powers have to go through to become a better hero. The first episode delivered blood, a moving story, and everything the Boys delivers. It fits right in and doesn’t try too hard on the humor.
