Superman and Lois has been a major hit for The CW, there’s no questioning that. The third season wasn’t the best but it still delivered an entertaining experience nonetheless.
Unfortunately, back in August, some further disappointing news rolled around.
The show is likely to be delayed until summer 2024 due to the writer and actor strikes.
This will be the longest period for a CW superhero show between seasons as it’s usually just 6-7 months after the final episode airs.
The disappointment does continue as rumors are floating around the web that the 4th season will have major conditions set. One of them is a reduction in budget. Another one is that the season will only consist of 10 episodes.
With the amount of DC shows that have been canceled since James Gunn took over, I’d be very surprised if Superman and Lois managed to secure a 5th season. It’s clear from everything else being canceled that this will go.
It’s a shame above all else because seasons 1 & 2 were some of the best superhero television in years. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch are the perfect Superman and Lois. The fact we got a Superman story that featured an older Clark Kent who’s a father to twins, married, and has been doing the Superman gig for many years at this stage. It’s admirable that The CW not just attempted it, but pulled it off.
It also shows the high level of love the show has. The fact that this show got another season when literally everything else got canceled. Batwoman, Doom Patrol, and Titans were all shows that got the boot but Superman & Lois scrambled another season. It still upsets me that so many good shows were booted but never mind.
The CW doesn’t have a fantastic track record with superhero shows, especially in the last few years. Gotham Knights managed just 1 season, as did Naomi. What The CW does have though is when they try, they do pull it off. The opening seasons of The Flash and Arrow for example will go down as some of the greatest superhero shows of all time.
I can’t see this getting another season. When you add all of that together; the cancelations, the conditions of the upcoming season, and the fact The CW now only has this show on their superhero roster speaks volumes. James Gunn wants to move on and start again. All in all, despite The CW giving me so many ups and downs, I’m thankful for what they did give us.
