In all honesty, I forgot this game existed. It was recently added to the PS Extra library and when it popped up after booting my PS5 up, I just sat there for a moment.
I’ll be honest, I loved the game. I did. I played it through with a friend and it made for a much better experience. The story was solid, I thought the combat was well rounded and the customization was pretty decent.
So how come a game I thought did well just fade into oblivion? I don’t know. It’s odd. The game was heavily criticized on release as it was always going to be because people want a Batman game, not a Gotham Knights game. However, I did want a Gotham Knights game because we had a few Batman games before it.
I think for me – the game was just played through once, not bothered about collectibles and then never played it again. The issue I have is that I knew it was going to just be a base game release, no DLC or added content so I saw no reason to come back and pick it up again.
Even now I have no desire to do so. I enjoyed it for what it was at the time but it’s not something I can see myself going back to get a platinum trophy for. The game did sell well so it’s surprising that even the developers just left it alone after release and never capitalized on anything.
I do want to remember it for what it was though. Playing this with a friend was a brilliant experience, there’s no doubt about that. The fact you can both just play through the entire story together whilst choosing different heroes made for quite a good experience. Weirdly not a memorable one but a good one nonetheless.
This game reminds me of A Way Out. The 2 player prison escape game. This was a game I had a blast with when I played with a friend but then after that, I never picked it up again and often forget the game even happened. Gotham Knights is very similar to that.
I can’t see us getting a sequel to this either. I reckon once WB realized the Suicide Squad game is about to flop harder than Avengers did, I believe then we’ll go back to what they know works – Injustice and Batman.
I do like the fact WB has tried different routes and for that they deserve to be applauded. Studios often stick to the tried and tested methods but WB has recruited different studios to work on different games. Gotham Knights was a financial success and an overall solid game. Now that it’s free (if you have PS Extra) then give it a try. It’s a game worth a go and if you’ve got a friend, play with them. It’s a great experience.
It’s just a shame I forgot this game even happened.
