Brief Overview
The first season of What If…? came out when we were still in the midst of lockdowns and restrictions due to Covid. This meant we actually missed an episode that featured here instead, the Iron Man and Gamora episode. This season felt more fleshed out and it’s probably as a result of the showrunners not being held down to restrictions.
What If…? continues its very interesting take on the MCU. Stories that change based on a decision being different. I still believe Star Wars could do with this exact same formula of a series. However, we’re always in for a treat with these episodes.
I’m not a huge fan of animated shows but for some reason, the intrigue in those decisions being different is what captures me into the idea of this. So I can easily overlook the animation because I’m genuinely interested in the stories. That’s what What If…? does and it’s no different for me in the second season.
Story – 8.5/10
As always with What If…?, the show centers around a particular story within the MCU that has a changed decision. We also know that there’s an end goal when it comes to a season. We build and build throughout these episodes into something far more sinister as it goes through.
Last season we had Ultron with the Infinity Stones and this time it’s Supreme Strange. We’ll talk more about Strange in the Antagonist section of this review. The biggest difference between the 2 seasons so far is this one took until the final episode to get to the point. That’s why the rating drops to an 8.5 in total.
However, the stories do intertwine throughout so they’re not always linked to the end. Some of the episodes are just interesting and that’s what makes the overall story aspect of the season good. For example, Hela being a hero was fantastic. We see these stories pan out from such a small decision being different from what we’ve already seen and it’s interesting.
The positive thing to take away from the story is that they could probably do 20+ seasons on this and still have more stories to tell. After so many movies and shows within the MCU now, it’s easy to pick one of those and create a what-if story based on it. It’s fascinating.
Action – 10/10
This season contained non-stop action. I don’t need to say much more than this if I’m being honest. Every episode was filled with incredible action. What makes it even better is the action made sense, it wasn’t just shoved in there for the sake of it and that’s why it gets a 10/10.
Characters – 9.9/10
Characters throughout this season were great, they honestly were. I loved that this show gave a much-needed “redemption” story to Captain Carter, it honestly showcased her immensely. I would have put this as a 10/10 but ultimately the roster was missing Spider-Man and some characters were not voiced by their live-action counterparts.

Entertainment – 9.5/10
Throughout the season I was thoroughly entertained. Each episode kept me tuned to the screen apart from one episode. While the “What If…? Kahhori reshaped the world” episode was still good, it wasn’t enough to keep me focused on it. The episode threw you into a story with no proper explanation and it was in a different language which kept me from focusing on the actual scenes.
Episodes – 9/10
9 episodes for season 2 which was the same as last season although you have the Iron Man and Gamora episode which should’ve been in season 1. The episodes chosen were fine with the exception of throwing a brand new character in there, giving her an entire episode and not having it with an English option threw me off. 9/10 seems fair for this season and it’s a solid rating nonetheless.
Antagonist – 6/10
Honestly, the series barely had an antagonist. It wasn’t until the finale episode that Supreme Strange became the main antagonist and decided to destroy universes to bring his world back, as well as his Christine. We saw him appear throughout the season but ultimately until the finale, he was just a taxi picking up certain characters.
Quality – 10/10
The overall quality of the show is nothing short of fantastic. Each episode showcases fantastic art design and the overall script of the episodes is nothing short of impressive by not being overly cringe and boring. The quality is some of the best animation that there has been in any animated project.
Favorite Episode
The finale was easily the best episode of the season, maybe the entire series in its entirety. Captain Carter and Kahhori using a huge array of weapons was beyond entertaining. The Infinity Stones, Mjolnir, the Ten Rings, Hela’s Crown, and many others were used in an arsenal against Supreme Strange. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Worst Episode
The worst episode for us is episode 6, dedicated to Kahhori. Now, it wasn’t a bad episode per se, I just struggled due to the subtitles. Some people are okay with that, but unfortunately, I’m not one of those, so I couldn’t really get immersed in the episode all that much.
