Let's TalkMarvelMovies

The Marvels is Underrated

This is a film I didn’t care a lot for and never did even during the marketing. It took me until yesterday to get around to watching the movie, which is rare for me considering I love the MCU, often watching nearly every release within a few days of them hitting the cinema.

Throughout the release of the film, I saw so many comments slating the movie. I also took note of the poor performance at the box office and naturally attuned myself to disliking the film before even watching it myself because of all the negative feedback. This isn’t like me, but the attention this movie got was weird.

Yesterday, once my 4-year-old was in bed and asleep, my wife and I decided to get some popcorn and snacks and then watch the film. Honestly, we were actually impressed.

Now I’ll state the film isn’t the best MCU film by any stretch but it’s far from the worst. I can think of several MCU movies this is better than. Let me note them;

  1. Thor 1, 2 & 4
  2. Iron Man 3
  3. Captain Marvel
  4. Black Widow
  5. Eternals

Now obviously they’re all poor (in my opinion) so it doesn’t set a high precedent but what I’m getting at is that there are worse MCU films out there.

In this film you could tell certain moments were rushed but in the overall grand scheme of things I enjoyed it. I laughed, felt sad, sat on the edge of my seat with some of the fight sequences and I had a good time.

The next time I do an MCU run, this isn’t a film I’ll actively hate coming to but instead, I’ll look forward to it. It’s one of those superhero films that is just there for a bit of fun and that’s it. The added bonus of this being an MCU film is that it sets up something bigger as each film typically tends to do.

The after-credits scene sets up something huge and this was marketed prior to the film’s release. It definitely does that.

All in all, it’s worth a watch. As I said it’s not a terrible film and if you’re stuck for something to watch at the moment but have nothing going on – give this a shot. It’s also not the “chick flick” people have said it is. I never got that vibe once during it. Most of that stuff came from Kamala being a fangirl over Carol and it was genuinely enjoyable.

I understand the voiced dislike at times for films like Love and Thunder because that film did deserve it but I think some of the hate this film got is a bit too far.

Of course, this is all my own opinion. If you didn’t like it that’s absolutely fine. I welcome the differing opinions when it comes to these films, I just don’t agree with pure hatred for a film when it’s just there to entertain you, and if it doesn’t entertain you? You don’t need to watch it.
