What I Liked

1. Some henchmen have captured Sunspot and are capturing mutants, For every mutant they capture, the buyer will pay them 10 grand to do so. This is where we see the X-Men come into play with Storm warning the villains about her fury. For an opening scene, this was a great way to do so.

2. I will forever love the tension between Wolverine and Cyclops. It’s just something about their “friendship” that will always be great for me. Wolverine and Cyclops both say how it is to one another. It’s a rivalry that will last a lifetime.

3. I do like how everyone from friends and enemies is not sold on Cyclops being leader, about him not being Professor X. I know they’ll have Cyclops prove to be a capable leader throughout the season but it’s just so well written that everyone is not sold on him.

4. Trask sets some broken sentinels onto the X-Men who quickly manage to destroy them all. Beast even takes control of one sentinel to use as an equalizer to the sentinels. Another wave of sentinels arrives and Cyclops radios Storm to give them the weather. Storm being the badass she is, causes a massive tornado to destroy the sentinels. This first episode has just shined a very bright light on Storm in my honest opinion.

5. The X-Men get a notification that someone has breached the Professor’s office. They rush to see who it could be. It turns out that Professor X has left the school to Magneto which in turns means he leads the X-Men.

What I Disliked

1. I’m still not fully sold on the animation style they’ve chosen for this series. It might take a few episodes before I can fully grasp the animation but for now, I’m not sold on it.

2. I wasn’t truly sold on the voice for Wolverine in the trailer, even though it’s the same voice actor as the original X-Men series, after recently watching that series and now this series, he sounds… different. It’s hard to describe but it could just be me.

Favorite Moment

My favorite moment would be when a sentinel destroys the X-jet grabbing Cyclops out of the jet and him being able to destroy it while Storm, Rogue, and Angel all get the X-Men who can’t fly and land safely. This scene delivers one of the best superhero landings I’ve ever seen. Cyclops lands by using his powers causing him to land safely on the ground. It was amazing.

Standout Character

The standout character is a difficult one for me in this first episode. It’s between Cyclops and Storm but ultimately I think this falls to Cyclops. People were writing him off as being a leader but he finally came around to being a leader.

Verdict

Honestly, a decent first episode which has its issues. While the story continues from the previous incarnation of the series and is still dealing with the loss of Professor X, this first episode dives into many issues from the new leader of the X-Men, them feeling like Jean and Scott will leave, and Sunspot dealing with the issue of having powers. I’m still not sold on the animation style of the show and the voice for Wolverine.
