Agatha All Along “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power” Review

Season 1 Episode 5 – With enemies closing in, the coven flees under the light of a blood moon to the next ghastly trial.

Please note, our reviews are based on likes and dislikes. These contain significant spoilers. If you haven’t already watched the episode, we recommend that you click off the article and come back once you have watched the episode. Enjoy!

What I Liked

1. We barely even get a second to breathe before all hell breaks loose. We find out that when Agatha murdered her Coven, she spared their children who are now known as the Salem 7 who are hunting Agatha. We see the group scramble to fight off one of them before flying away. I did love the stereotypical flying scene in front of the moon on a broom though.

2. Mrs Hart returns but not as it would appear. The group’s third trial involves an Ouija Board and the spirit they’re communicating with is Sharon herself, or so it seems. She “takes over” Agatha’s body and I’ve got to be honest, Kathryn Hahn plays this part with utter perfection. It turns out she’s just winding the group up which is also hilarious.

What I Disliked

1. Agatha inadvertently kills Alice. Alice attempts to save Agatha from her Mom but then attempts to take in the blasts for her own good resulting in Alice dying. I’m not a fan of this at all. I understand Agatha is all about power and at whatever cost but I don’t know, I expected Agatha to slowly turn and appreciate her newly formed Coven. Alice was also a solid character for the show. I’m glad Teen called her out.

2. After the above, I’m now confused. Jennifer and Lilia throw Agatha into the sinking mud only for Teen to then throw the other two into the same mud but not saving Agatha. We then see him with a crown on his head before the credits roll. I know all will be answered next week but this made little sense as it currently stands, even more so considering this was a very short episode.

Edit: After the episode finished, I came to the realization that Teen is Wiccan, Wanda’s son. I’m not here to edit my scores because this still doesn’t make a huge lot of sense at the moment. When Agatha mentioned; “you’re exactly like your mother”, I thought she was referring to herself. I’ve put this edit on so people know I’m aware of how it played out but as it stands, I’m still not a fan of this reveal so if I caught on immediately, it still would’ve been a dislike which left the total number at 2.

Favorite Moment

Agatha’s Mom shows up as a ghost seemingly being the one who was in control of the Ouija Board. She even takes over Agatha’s body and tries to kill Jennifer. Once the lights are on and the realization hits, Agatha’s reaction is brilliant – literally acting like a teenage girl and it made me laugh. A very good scene.

Standout Character

It’s a difficult one to gauge this week as nobody truly stood out. I’d say Agatha because she made me laugh but her development was terrible. I will give it to Teen as I feel like he was the only one to make an impact on the episode.

Verdict

A huge step backward in Agatha’s development moving forward. I’ve been enjoying the show so far but this episode was definitely the weakest out of the 5 so far, even more so considering it felt drastically and unnecessarily short. I do think next week will make this episode make more sense but as of now, I’ve come away feeling very confused.
