We recently learned that James Gunn is currently in the process of speaking to Rocksteady and NetherRealm about future DC games. If you weren’t aware, NetherRealm more specifically is the studio responsible for both of the Injustice video games we’ve had.
It’s been nearly 8 years since the release of Injustice 2. The game had a lot to give some an element of replayability in The Multiverse section.
The game also had a solid story that saw the rift between Batman and Superman go beyond anything we have seen in the gaming series to date.
Injustice 3 has been spoken about in the years after. Rumors circulating around plans but NetherRealm has never said anything concrete about a third game happening.
Now that James Gunn is currently in conversation with the studio, an Injustice 3 makes perfect sense. DC has fallen apart in the video gaming world as of late, especially with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad flop. Injustice 3 would make up for some of that.
Although Injustice isn’t a unique game, after all, it’s made by the same studio that gives us Mortal Kombat but it has some uniqueness in its own right. I adored The Multiverse mode. You play as each character and get to edit their gear, it was fairly addictive. I’m surprised a third hasn’t even been announced at this stage.
DC has one of the most stacked rosters of characters in any franchise. Injustice 3 only donned 30 DC characters whilst the other 8 were from other franchises. That’s just 30 out of over 10,000 that DC has. There are so many possibilities for a third Injustice game, even a soft reboot if they really wanted to.
I’d suspect if James Gunn is in talks with the studio then this is their bread and butter. If those talks go well then I wouldn’t be surprised if it would be an Injustice entry. In fairness, I hope it is. Despite the fact I’m terrible at these types of fighting games, I had a blast with the Injustice franchise.
There is also Rocksteady in the background, we can all say we hope it’s a new Batman entry as that’s what they do best. It’s an exciting time moving ahead with James Gunn at the helm. I haven’t been this excited for DC in a long time.
