Right, before we start, I’m 26. Growing up, these were the movies I grew up with. So, regardless of people’s thoughts on the movies, I have a soft spot for them.
Were they perfect? Of course not. Were they great? Questionable.
Let’s get the first ones out the way. I hated Phantom Menace, I thought Attack of the Clones was okay, and Revenge of the Sith was absolutely incredible.
Darth Vader became one of the most brutal, nasty villains in almost any movie franchise, and the lore behind the character is fascinating, to say the least.
Whilst the Prequels followed Anakin’s story before becoming Vader, I don’t think this was really needed, but it’s great in the aspect we did see who Vader was before the dark side. That’s one of the reasons why I liked the Prequels.
Lightsaber combat has ALWAYS been a weakness for me, and watching Luke and Vader’s battle in Return of the Jedi is one of my all-time favourite scenes, so getting a lot of lightsaber action was the pinnacle for me enjoying these movies.
Not to mention, we got to see the Jedi Order become so set in their peace, the surprise from Palpatine changed everything. That’s what is so great about this, we actually see the height of the Jedi Order, the democracy, and how it was until Anakin decided to start killing children.
One of the reasons people hate the Prequels is because of the writing, whilst I do agree to a certain aspect, I think Hayden Christiensen did the absolute best he could have done, and really nailed the Anakin look. Try and think of Anakin looking or acting any differently – you can’t. He IS Anakin.
The entire story between Anakin and Padme could have been done differently, which I agree with. It was ridiculous for the most part, and the scenes between the two are some of the worst parts of the Prequels but there is more to it than that.
Let’s look at the characters we got. We got Mace Windu, Darth Maul, Boba Fett’s father, Count Dooku, Qui-Gon, General Grievous and so many more. There was never a short selection of characters – and for the most part, all of them were done great.
Revenge of the Sith for me remains the best Star Wars movie, of all time. That creates controversy for the most part, but that’s the movie I really enjoy every time I watch it. It was the literal slow build of Anakin becoming Vader, and everything crumbling around the Jedi. Order 66 remains a key point in the Star Wars lore, and we literally got to see that live-action.
These movies created some of the best comic book stories, especially Vader hunting the remaining Jedi. All as a result of the Order 66 that we saw. Hate or love these movies, but can we just appreciate the Anakin and Obi-Wan battle on Mustafar? Nobody can say they are NOT impressed with that. Even if you think it was long – remember, this is one of the strongest Jedi/Sith to ever exist, fighting a Jedi Master in his prime. It was bound to last long.
It’s very difficult at times to try and explain this to some Star Wars fans because they fail to look further past the Original trilogy. Whilst I respect that – those were the movies some people grew up with, but sometimes Star Wars fans love to hate anything that isn’t to do with the Originals or Boba Fett. This is why I wanted to write this article, purely to explain just a few reasons why the Prequels were decent in telling the major story linking to the Originals.
Even the new trilogy was okay in it’s right, but the same fans who hated the Prequels hated the new trilogy – and barely had any reason to debate on why. ALL of this is here to stay, and it will remain canon. I hate The Last Jedi, it was a disaster but I can still find the good in it, and I would still watch it on a Star Wars binge.
