Swamp Thing “Loose Ends” Review

Season 1 episode 10 “Still reeling from the revelation of the truth behind his existence, Swamp Thing goes on the offensive against Ellery’s mercenary team hunting him; Abby comes up against Jason Woodrue, who has crossed the line to save his wife’s life.”

What Was Good?

1. A couple interesting parts happened at the beginning of what looks like, an explosive finale. An emotional scene between Alec and Abby pursues, shortly after he drags his dead body out the swamp. He explains this time, they won’t hurt him again, and he will go after them. The very curious Jason has his wife tied to chair after she popped all of her pills in once fellow swoop. A solid start.

2. Avery is losing his grip. The mercenaries are gearing up to this time, kill Alec. Avery orders them to bring him alive, as his entire life’s work has gone into his research. The mercenaries turn against him, understanding the severe casualties they took last time. It’s finally nice to see Avery gets his comeuppance.

3. The horror elements return to this episode, something we have not saw since the first couple episode. Maria is locked up in the psychiatric hospital, but is having visions of “demons”. The supernatural aspect is always been a strong trait of the series, especially when it came down to Shawna.

4. The mercenaries finally decide to enter the swamp, and go after the Swamp Thing. He takes one of them and baits the rest of the squad perfectly. You can guess what happens here, but we all know he absolutely tears them apart one by one. Incredible scenes, I love. It. He does however let the captain of the group go, and warns him to tell others to leave him alone.

5. Abby takes a visit to Jason, and finds his wife tied to chair suffering locked in syndrome. He’s created some sort of “cure”, and as if he goes to give it to her, Abby attempts to stop him, however miserably failing in the process. Jason grabs Abby by by the throat and throws her up against the wall, a police officer intercepts, uses a taser and puts Jason down. to be honest, I would have rather seen him give his wife the cure, purely because I want to see what happens. Still time yet though…

6. Alec and Swamp Thing have a conversation. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s extremely emotional, and you feel for Swamp Thing in so many different ways. Alec tells himself, well, explains to Swamp Thing that he can’t go back to being a human, and has to continue his own path, find out who he really wants to be.

What Was Bad?

1. Daniel seems to just leave, after the entire build up during the entire season, we got one piece of action before he just left. If this was the last episode I would have much preferred him and Alec to fight alongside each other. It’s disappointing.

2. The sheer fact they knew the series was ending but left it on cliffhangers to almost every ark. Jason turns into his own variant of Swamp Thing, but to leave it like that is incredible poor on the fans part, knowing from then we will never see what happens. Jason seems to kill Matt, but it leaves a sour taste. They knew the series was ending, and I get they basically filmed the entire series but it should have ended differently. Expand the episode, add one more, anything. If this is truly the end of this series I will be massively disappointed. Especially considering all these cliffhangers are literally setting up the most perfect season ever if it was given the green light.

Holy Shit Moment

Lucilia looks like she’s ready to go after Avery, leaving Matt in the hospital. She gets in her car, immediately you sense something’s wrong. You know she’s dead the minute she gets in the car. Avery is already waiting in the back, and stabs her through the back right through to the front. Somehow she actually manages to survive the initial wound. Avery then traps her in the car, and puts the car into the swamp, leaving her to die. Absolutely brutal, expected, but still brutal. As he gets back into his car, he coughs up a part of the swamp. You just hope after this somebody really ruins him.

Star Character

Derek Mears, who plays Alec Holland/Swamp Thing.

The Verdict

Overall an explosive finale, however this is the final episode of Swamp Thing. The amount of cliffhangers they left it on was such a bad move for the fans of the show. I hope it gets revived for another season.
