Superman & Lois “Pilot” Review

Season 1 Episode 1 – Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended by mysterious strangers.

What I Liked

1. It’s been less than a few minutes and I’m already super impressed. We know the story of Superman, so no need to go into too much detail and also seeing Tyler don the OG suit is amazing as well. The backstory explaining everything is interesting, especially with their children which are teenagers right now, which isn’t something we’re THAT familiar with when it comes to Superman. So far the opening of the show has been the most impressive the CW has done yet, I’m instantly engaged.

2. I absolutely loved the nuclear reactor shot. It was necessary for showing us what this particular Superman is all about. Tyler looks damn good in the suit, and the suit is exceptional. Just all-round great scene!

3. Jordan, Clark’s son playing Injustice was a quality little Easter egg there, especially playing it myself just recently.

4. A very emotional scene happens after Clark is fired from the Daily Planet, and then his Mom has a stroke. The acting here is just simply superior, and super impressive all around.

5. Jordan, Jon and Sarah all go to the barn to reset the router. After Jordan attempts to climb fairly high in order to fix it, he slips and falls. As the poles come down after him, Jonathan dives in to try and save him. They both come out of it without a scratch. To me, this is showing that they both have powers. After all, I do know that Jon does become Superboy in the comics.

6. Jonathan and Jordan go back to the barn and discover a secret entrance to a basement below, and discover the ship that Clark came to Earth with. Now, this is interesting because when Jordan touched the ship it gave him this orange crystal. This could just be a key to the ship or something else, but it’s definitely intriguing that’s for sure.

7. The next part I didn’t know whether or not I disliked this scene, but I’m going to explain why it’s on here. Clark finally tells both his children that he’s Superman, and the reaction he gets isn’t a good one, especially from Jordan. Now why I like this one so much is because of Jon, he seems protective of his brother. They don’t have reasons to be angry when their Dad is saving countless amounts of lives as Superman, but I get it. This scene was intense, and rightly so.

8. Superman has a fight with an unknown man in a suit that seemingly knows everything about Clark. The fight takes to just outside the Earths atmosphere, where he gets stabbed in the chest with kryptonite. After falling from space, he manages to wake up just before hitting the floor and rushes straight to Jordan and Jon.

9. Looks like the show will be majorly set in Smallville moving forward. I do like this a lot, I’ve got to be honest. It’s fairly nice to see the family take over the farm and home from Martha after her untimely death.

10. It turns out the person in the suit is a version of Lex Luthor. I’m assuming this is a result of Crisis and we’re seeing a Lex from a different universe or world that seems immensely powerful. I didn’t want it to be Lex if I’m being brutally honest, but I really do like this. A lot.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report.

Favourite Moment

The party with Jordan and Sarah happens. After some intimate moments, Jordan kisses her until her boyfriend shows up and straight-up big boots Jordan off the log. Jon shows up out of nowhere and a fight happens. I think I was correct on the protective brother side but this is absolutely fantastic. They’re both beaten up badly until the powers are revealed. It turns out, none other than Jordan has laser vision…

I give this moment my favourite purely because I have two brothers personally, one older, one younger. The protective side resonated with me in many ways hence the reason why I loved this scene so much.

Standout Character

I think deservingly I have to give it to Clark in this episode. The emotions, the fights, just everything from superhero, to husband, to father, to son is just something special. Tyler really does a fantastic job portraying the character, and dare I say he’s my favourite live-action Superman yet? That’s an article…for another day.

Verdict

This pilot was easily one of my favourite pilots of all time, without a shadow of a doubt this episode was absolutely fantastic. I can’t express how well all of the actors have done, also the writers and producers for the show. This is going to be a very special season for The CW, and it may be their comeback year.
