Season 1 Episode 4 – John Walker loses patience with Sam and Bucky as they learn more about Karli Morgenthau.
What I Liked
1. Straight off the bat, we get to see Wakanda and a 6-year flashback to Bucky and Ayo. We actually get to see some of the stuff Bucky had to endure in order to get better, and it’s damn emotional seeing him go through everything he’s actually done. A beautiful start.
2. Not much has happened for a while, but I like how John has come in and is literally taking zero sh** now. I actually have to come really like John as Cap, so I am happy he’s around in this episode.
3. Karli and Sam have a good conversation about everything, eventually one to one and we as viewers actually learning more about Karli. Why she’s doing what she’s doing etc. Walker then just decides “screw it” and walks in to interrupt the meeting which obviously causes Karli to get super defensive and retreat. We are getting glimpses of John becoming increasingly impatient and agitated as well.
4. John storms in on the fantastic trio, and literally offers Sam out to a one on one fight until the Wakandan’s show up. John, being arrogant, decides to sarcastically tap one of the Wakandan soldiers on the soldier before she wipes him out. A fight then pursued with Zemo just standing there drinking his drink. Why do I honestly love Zemo so much?!
5. The Wakandan’s don’t let up, and they’re gearing up to actually kill John without any hesitation. Bucky gives some hilarious words of encouragement before he and Sam step in to try and de-escalate the situation, which then brings them into the fight.
6. I’m actually kind of liking this Karli character. She’s definitely in the realms of being different when it comes to being a “villain”. Her reasoning makes sense, especially when it comes to Sam and the call to Sarah.
7. John has taken the serum as expected, and this is proven when he fights back against one of the soldiers and destroys a couple of them in hand to hand combat. I actually really like this.
8. Hoskin’s looks to have been killed by Karli when she full-blown punches him in the chest, causing him to fly back into a Pilar. John goes absolutely crazy and chases after one of the men. After getting him down to the floor, he loses it. He then consistently slams his shield down killing him. This is done right in the public eye who are obviously recording it. As the episode ends, we see the blood on the shield. That was a sheer brutal ending.
What I Disliked
Nothing to report this week.
Favourite Moment
Zemo manages to escape his handcuffs and waits for Karli to run through and he shoots her clean in the stomach. Now this reason why this is my favourite moment is the unpredictability. As Zemo stands above the serum, you actually debate on if he’d actually take it. However, he stamps on every glass vial before being absolutely knocked clean out by John. One vial did remain intact, and John secretly keeps it. My theory is becoming more and more correct in that John will eventually take it.
And he did…
Standout Character
I’m giving it to John. He was incredible in this episode. He was firm, assertive and generally wanted Sam and Buck to realise he IS Captain America. Then obviously taking the serum, and going crazy is another factor. A huge episode for John this week, and I’m glad it was.
Verdict
I said this to one of my colleagues, that this is the easiest 10/10 I have given to an episode since The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale. It had everything that we expected prior to the show releasing, and the next 2 episodes are going to be very, very special.
