Supergirl “Blind Spots” Review

Season 6 Episode 12 – Kelly is horrified when the Ormfell building implodes, injuring many in the community; Kelly embraces her power and fully steps into her role as Guardian.

What I Liked

1. John Diggle returns to this episode and shows up as James sent him to help Kelly. It’s always a pleasure to have Diggle in any episode, and it’s always nice to have Oliver Queen mentioned.

2. Kelly soon realized that Jean Rankin is harnessing fifth-dimensional power, and after Orlando interrupts her speech. She suits up and goes after her, and we even get to see Diggle make 2 of her bodyguards look like amateurs. A great scene.

3. Going off my dislike, I am so glad Kelly decided to confront the team after she fails at stopping Rankin. She explains in such an amazing way how unhelpful they’ve been, and I could not agree more with her.

4. After so many episodes with Diggle in, we finally know why he turned down the Green Lantern mantle. It turns out, it would have meant he would have had to leave his family behind in order to become a Lantern. I do kind of agree with the reasoning, but I do feel like the writers just should not have bothered at the end of Arrow. However, in the end, Brainiac does if John is heading back to Metropolis, and he answers with “yeah, worlds await”. Hopefully, that tease is explored in the Armageddon crossover on The Flash.

5. Kelly goes to Brainiac to help her with the suit. As it turns out, he’s actually been designing her suit for quite some time for when she was ready. I really liked this scene, and how excited he got.

6. Kelly asks Brainiac the question, in the 31st century, are racism and discrimination still a thing. Unfortunately, in this series and I’d imagine probably rains true is that it still is. It’s better, but even 1,000 years later it still happens due to generational scars, and that’s important. Incredibly important. It shows that nobody is born a racist, and that, that is true.

What I Disliked

1. The shows are about Supergirl yet it feels like she’s the furthest thing away from the show. Never have I seen her so unwilling to help, more so a member of her “team”. When Kelly initially needed her help after first discovering what Orlando and Joey were going through, Supergirl was the first to help. Nxyl is in hiding, for now. She should at least be listening or attempting to help. Supergirl does finally help, but only after Kelly abruptly tells her how useless she’s been essential.

2. I hate to be honest here, but I am not a fan of the new Guardian suit at all. I’m happy Kelly has taken the mantle, but I just cannot say I like it at all. The suit itself is okay, but the helmet looks ridiculous.

3. The end of the episode with the conversation between Kelly and Alex was unnecessary. It really just wasn’t needed. It feels like as soon as Kara apologized for not being there, a huge self-pity party began. I understand the need to fight against racism, and what POC have suffered through generations, but the end of the episode just wasn’t needed. Kelly should have been standing tall and ready to take the fight.

Favourite Moment

Quite an intense start to the episode. The show takes us back prior to Nxyl and Supergirl’s showdown, where the building collapsed in the Heights. Joey and his friend are amongst the wreckage, and Kelly takes them to a hospital which is completely overwhelmed, as is Kelly. She really does stand out here, trying her absolute best to help as Joey and his friend are struggling to breathe with hardly any nurses and respirators. Her call to James was extremely emotional on top, huge props to the entire opening of the episode.

Standout Character

This episode was a heavily focused episode on Kelly and her transition into Guardian, alongside a fight against racism so she takes my standout this week. There was a couple of scenes she was in that were a bit of a letdown, but on the overall gauge, she was great.

Verdict

This episode was “meh”. It was needed to highlight racism, and also needed to help Kelly’s transition into Guardian but the episode as a whole didn’t bring anything worth remembering. I hate to say it, but this episode was average.
