Doom Patrol “Dada Patrol” Review

Season 3 Episode 5 – Madame Rouge enlists the Doom Patrol’s help after learning about her unsettling past. While the rest of the team works to infiltrate the target, Rita stays behind and finds a surprising connection with their mysterious friend.

What I Liked

1. Cliff is shown to be taking several of the drugs from that sketchy pharmacy he found online. I’m not entirely sure if this will have dire consequences down the road, but this was a very humorous scene. The part in which he blows off Vic’s advice to not take the drugs had me in stitches.

2. The other personalities in the Underground have become far more possessive of Kay and begin to turn against Jane after she supports Kay’s request of going to the surface. I’m very interested to see if this will lead to a confrontation in a future episode.

3. After sending the team off to infiltrate the Sisterhood of Dada, Madame Rouge bonds with Rita who had stayed behind. It’s a very sweet subplot and is also somewhat tragic when you realize that she will more than likely become a villain if she regains her memory.

4. Silas has given his son partial control over his tech behind the back of S.T.A.R. Labs, much to the delight of Vic. It shows that even though Silas and Victor have a very complex relationship, the former truly does love his son and will be there for him when he needs him most.

5. Larry now has some sort of parasite in his body. It is very disgusting and provides a somewhat ominous story for Larry as this thing inside him will more than likely be a detriment unlike the Negative Spirit.

6. Cliff has become extremely high from all of the drugs that he took. I genuinely could not stop laughing during the scene in which Cliff is on drugs.

7. We see the team split up where each of them meet the members of the Sisterhood of Dada. The Sisterhood is shown to be very odd but nonetheless extremely creepy as they easily get inside the team’s head and make them question themselves.

8. The environment itself is very fascinating as it provides an Alice in Wonderland style vibe with several talking objects and characters that say nothing but nursery rhymes.

9. Jane is now forbidden to see Kay by the other personalities. It is very easy to feel bad for Jane and Kay in this scene but you can also understand why the other personalities are taking such extreme measures due to how reckless Jane can be.

10. Larry has found his living son Paul who is wandering through the lair of the Sisterhood of Dada and seems to have been brainwashed. He also discovers that his son is a member of the Bureau of Normalcy. It is very heartwarming to see Larry take Paul in and tend to him even though he tried to have him arrested.

11. Vic’s encounter with the Sisterhood has left him very distraught as he angrily brushes Rita off when she asks what happened. It is not often that we see Vic so vulnerable in the show but it is always a fascinating scene when he is shown like that.

What I Disliked

Favourite Moment

The ending in which Rita steals Madame Rouge’s time machine got me so excited as there are so many opportunities that can be made from this, especially in a show like Doom Patrol. I don’t think I have ever been more excited for an episode until now.

Standout Character

The standout character for me this week has to be Vic. In addition to the very nice scene with his father, the scene in which a member of the Sisterhood of Dada causes Vic to question himself was one of the most intense scenes I have seen from the show. While he has just as many problems as the rest of the team, Vic has always been the one who is able to keep it together the most. The way Vic is shown after his encounter left me almost as shaken as him.

Verdict

This is yet another fantastic episode of the season. While I was initially disappointed that Alan Tudyk did not return as Mr. Nobody since the Sisterhood of Dada is mainly associated with him in the comics, I honestly didn’t care that he was missing in the end. The new group provides yet another fascinating challenge to our main characters as they are only further broken after trying to do the right thing and put a stop to the Sisterhood. The ending also just left me on the edge of my seat as it opens up a variety of exciting opportunities.
