Agatha All Along “Maiden Mother Crone” Review

Season 1 Episode 9 – The truth of Agatha Harkness and The Witches’ Road.

What I Liked

1. After all we’ve seen of Agatha, it is nice to finally see what she was like before losing her son. All she wanted to do was protect her son by all means necessary. We’ve seen so many sequences of Agatha where all she does is backstab people to gain power but this is different, I’m happy we got to see this version of her.

2. So Agatha actually never completed the road, as it never existed. It was a ploy for Agatha to steal other witches’ powers. Billy was the one who created it, and that’s what he referred to at the end of the last episode. That’s super interesting.

3. Agatha returns as a ghost and I’m getting Midnight Suns vibes from that. The laugh we heard at the end of the last episode was her ghost. I love that so much.

4. Billy attempts to banish Agatha’s ghost and begins conducting a spell to do so until he realizes Agatha is terrified of facing her son in the afterlife. This is a beautiful moment when the two come together to find Tommy.

What I Disliked

1. I’m not a fan of the majority of the finale being dedicated to flashbacks. Understandably things now make sense but this should’ve been an earlier episode. It takes so much away from what they could do with the present time and this story could’ve been told earlier.

    2. I’m a bit upset we didn’t get a cameo though. Understandably this sounds entitled but I believe we could’ve got something decent towards the end. Whether or not it sets up something to do with the Midnight Suns, Wanda, or even someone else. I’m never in the boat of knocking a series or a movie without a cameo but I felt like this did need one.

    Favorite Moment

We learn the truth about Agatha’s son. He wasn’t killed in Agatha’s quest for power, she was supposed to kill witches seemingly daily for Death to prevent her from taking him. She decides against killing that day for him and Death shows up to take him. This is fairly emotional but it’s good to see the truth here. It’s no wonder she turns the way she does.

    Standout Character

Agatha is the clear standout in this episode. We saw a different side of her here which is something I appreciate considering everything we’ve seen during this series and also WandaVision.

    Verdict

I’ve seen some glowing reviews for this particular episode but this wasn’t for me. This didn’t feel like a finale episode, the last episode felt more final than this. It’s even further disappointing because we’re hearing there isn’t going to be a second season so we’re left with a cliffhanger that probably won’t be expanded upon. There was so much they could’ve done here. This episode should’ve been the pre-finale and then we have
