You have probably saw the media recently with regards to multiple directors, and actors attacking the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
To name a few; Jennifer Aniston, Ken Loach, and Francis Ford Coppola are just three to throw in the hat. All three have had strong words to say about Marvel, and their global dominance.
Now, my issue is not that they’re wrong. More importantly, that they’re entitled to an opinion like every single one of us.
I merely want to write this, as I feel their opinions are not based on experience. Judging by the comments they made, I cannot possibly even believe they’ve watched much of the MCU, if any at all.
I don’t believe any of these people are jealous. I do believe a lot of the comments are unwarranted though. I’m going on a whim here, but a lot of the comments I see from people seem to base on the same thing;
“Superhero, and comic book movies are for kids”.
Considering Infinity War, and Endgame raked in almost $5b I struggle to take this claim in. Maybe these three people feel the same way? Most of us watched Iron Man when it was released in 2008. Personally I would have been 15, so I have grew up with this.
Ken Loach claims cinema should be about drama. (I have completely downsized his interview, but this is basically what he said). His latest movie is around the UK’s current way of life. Zero hour contracts, poverty, and more. While I completely feel his movie has a place in cinema, purely on the impact alone. I don’t feel like all cinema should be based on this.
Cinema is an escape for a lot of people, including me. I wouldn’t go to watch his movie personally at the cinema, purely because I live in this country. I see these issues every single day, I don’t want to go to the cinema to pay to watch it on a bigger screen.
I want to be entertained. Marvel has been making comic books for years. I know people of all ages that have grew up with these comic books, creative comic books may I add. So seeing these characters live action is an incredible era for a lot of us.
Marvel, and Disney released Iron Man 11 years ago. Since then, we have had another 22 movies. Multiple crossovers, characters, and stories.
We have characters such as Captain America who inspire kids all around the world. The movies were not just entertainment. They taught us how to love, be better, be kind, respect, and to trust your family. People all around the world are inspired by Marvel.
Then there’s the beautiful comment that all of these movies “are the same”. When I see those comments, I know immediately they have not watched barely any of Marvel’s movies.
Here’s 5 movies that were different to these claims.
1. Civil War, it was essentially the good guys vs the good guys.
2. Infinity War, all of our heroes got absolutely outplayed at every turn.
3. Thor Ragnarok, Thor lost his entire home planet, sacred weapon, and his eye.
4. Spider-Man was outed in Far From Home.
5. Winter Soldier, Captain America completely lost, and allowed himself to be beat down for his best friend.
That’s just 5. Granted, I’m not saying every single MCU movie is great. That is absolutely not the case. There’s some poor movies. The Incredible Hulk, Thor: The Dark World, and Iron Man 3 just to name a few were disastrous.
Creativity definition: “the use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness.”
I get that these movies are adaptions from comic books, but a lot of them do NOT follow the material, and create their own arks, routes within those. To spin these comic books, onto the big screen, how is that not creative? The teams behind the movies do an incredible job, especially during the suits as well. It may mostly be CGI. These movies are sci-fi movies. You can’t have enough CGI in these movies, it’s what makes them explosive, creative, and a truly incredible experience on the big screen. Without CGI, a lot of movies wouldn’t exist today.
Art is subjective. Some people might completely disagree with everything I’m saying here. That’s okay. This is purely my own opinion on the matter.
I absolutely love the era we’re in. The movies, the shows, the comics, the merchandise. It’s exciting, and us nerds can really come out of our shells with this stuff. I’m happy to admit to anyone that I love going to the cinema to watch every single superhero movie, good or bad, in the cinema.
