Are Star Wars Shows Preferred Over Movies Now?

Picture this, it’s 2005, Revenge of the Sith released and it’s a fantastic ending to a prequel series that suffered mixed results around the world. It’s the end of a trilogy of movies we haven’t gotten since 1983. The Star Wars universe is comprised of now only 6 movies and a lot of books.

Never in a million years would I have expected to be slammed with multiple upcoming LIVE-ACTION Star Wars shows. We have The Mandalorian, we’ve got The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, The Acolyte, Lando, Rangers of the New Republic (unsure due to Gina Carrano’s firing) all coming out in the next couple of years.

We already know Disney isn’t stopping there with their shows as they have more in the pipeline. Currently, though, there doesn’t seem to be a single movie insight. Yes, we’ve got announced movies with attached directors but not a single detail on titles, settings, or even an estimated release year.

A lot of fans I speak to seem to tell me because of The Mandalorian, they have more faith in the TV side than they do the movies. I mean, since Disney bought the rights to Star Wars they’ve released 5 movies.

  1. The Force Awakens
  2. The Last Jedi
  3. Rise of Skywalker
  4. Rogue One
  5. Solo

Every movie except Solo performed exceptionally well at the Box Office. There’s no denying that they were monumental successes for Disney. However, fans around the world have a lot of mixed feelings in regards to all of those movies except Rogue One which is just a universally loved film.

I enjoyed the sequel trilogy but I feel like the potential could have been far more and let’s be honest, hardly anybody cares about a Han Solo prequel.

This idea of Star Wars changed in 2019 when the first season of The Mandalorian dropped on Disney+. Even I wasn’t expecting the success to come with it. After all, following a bounty hunter never interested me but every single episode has been perfect thus far.

On our own reviews, every episode has scored a perfect 10/10.

There are many fans on social media that claim The Mandalorian is single handily carrying the Star Wars universe on its back. Is that an overstatement? No. I genuinely don’t think so.

People often forget how large the Star Wars universe actually is, especially when you take the Legends aspects into account as well. Sometimes there isn’t enough time in a movie to fully tell a story.

In the Prequel trilogy, for example, they had to release the Clone Wars animated show because so much happened. So many things that we never saw in the movies, which meant a lot of casual fans genuinely missed a lot of important details.

My mother loves Star Wars, but she never even heard of Ahsoka Tano until The Mandalorian season 2. It says it all. TV allows the capability to draw out a story more carefully giving us events we would otherwise miss in a movie.

It’s not to say I want no future Star Wars movies because I absolutely do. Cinema trips are my favorite, they’re my escape from the real world and it’s my best place to be especially after a tough week at work. Seeing Star Wars in theatres is always an experience.

Right now, what do we even have when it comes to movies? Well, it’s not looking great.

  1. Rogue Squadron
  2. Untitled Taika Waititi Movie
  3. A Droid Story
  4. Untitled Rian Johnson Trilogy
  5. Untitled Kevin Feige Movie
  6. Untitled J.D. Dillard Movie (rumored)

Out of all of those, the only two I care for are Taika and Kevin’s movies. I’m still baffled as to why Rian was ever given a trilogy but here we are.

It’s been now 2 years since we’ve had a Star Wars movie and we fans literally have no idea where or when the next one is even going to be.

To answer the question in the article title?

Yes. The vast majority of people I speak to tell me they’d much prefer a 6-8 episode run of a series instead of a movie. It was a similar case when Obi-Wan Kenobi was in talks, people thought it was a movie and honestly, they felt a bit let down. A series always made more sense.

I believe TV is outperforming movies. Not financially, no. Nothing will top the billions the Sequel trilogy has made at the box office but in terms of fan satisfaction and merchandise? Absolutely.

Just look at Grogu. The success a single character has brought to the franchise is astounding. Merchandise for him is still at every corner you go to in stores.

In the streaming and digital age, people generally prefer a good series over a movie. It’s shown in recent times such as The Mandalorian, Squid Games, WandaVision, etc.

Answer me this in the comments as I’m extremely intrigued by your answer;
