There’s been a lot of talk about who will play Bruce Wayne in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. Gunn has already canceled everything to restart the universe due to the up-and-down success previously.
David Corenswet has already been cast as Superman so it’s expected we’ll be seeing new castings over time, one of them potentially being Batman himself.
Robert Pattinson already portrays a live-action Batman but this is set in his universe as Matt Reeves has indicated. This leaves an empty slot within the new DCU.
Here are my thoughts on this; I don’t think we should bother with another Batman. It becomes confusing. It becomes convoluted. There’s no need when there’s already a high-budget Bruce Wayne. It can become confusing to the casual fans and then how do you do it? Do you have two Batman getting their films?
DC has proven multiple times there are numerous ways for illogical things to work. If Gunn’s plans eventually head towards a rebooted Justice League then I’m sure they can work it in the script to have Pattinson’s Batman involved.
If it does get to a point where they want to cast another Batman then it would surely make sense to have them as a cameo-posed hero instead – showing up in films when needed but then what’s the point?
Jensen Ackles has expressed interest in portraying the role and I think if it wasn’t for Pattinson then he could’ve been a damn good choice. He looks the part and judging by his role within The Boys as Soldier Boy, it could work.
All in all though I think if Gunn is to go down the huge franchise and follow Marvel’s route in the beginning, then just use Pattinson’s Batman.
Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman does create a debate on whether or not he lives up to the role but we called for it to happen even before he was cast. I love the portrayal and the brutality of it, I also love the selflessness side of this version as he helps injured civilians at the end of the film in broad daylight.
James Gunn has the power to make a fantastic universe moving forward and I fully believe he will regardless of which way he progresses the new universe. I’m just glad we have someone at the helm who cares. The franchise badly needed a reboot and I’m ecstatic to see Gunn held nothing back in ensuring this happened.
