Batwoman “Grinning From Ear To Ear” Review

Season 1 Episode 14 “Batwoman and Luke are on the trail of a villain targeting social media mavens; Sophie gets an unexpected visit from her mother; Mary offers her expertise to assist Kate; Alice focuses on her plans for retribution.”

What I Liked

1. Straight from the start, a Joker inspired weird scene happened. As the female looks in the mirror, she keeps seeing herself with a sad face, so she takes a piece of the broken glass and cuts a smile in her face. Fairly brutal opening to the episode.

2. Reggie, the man who saved Jacob’s life in prison finally enacts on his pushed favor. It turns out, this is the same man that is accused of murdering Lucius Fox. It’s finally great to figure out what happened to all those we know and love.

3. As Batwoman finally figures out who’s slashing smiles into women’s faces, it turns the same female has given her own mother the same scars. This is just ruthless.

4. Sophie vs the slasher happens now. She takes her down, disappointingly though we don’t see the full fight, and she just leaves her tied up to wait for the GCPD. Sophie has been completely different in this episode. It’s the first episode I’ve actually liked the character.

5. Alice goes one step further after investigating the slasher. As she’s tied up from losing the Sophie fight, it seems as though Alice cuts her face completely off. Thankfully we didn’t see that or it would be like a scene from Hostel!

6. Sophie opens up to her mother about her sexuality. Often times in these superhero shows we always see the best outcome, but in this instance, it was the complete opposite as her mother acts with disdain. It’s nice to see Sophie finally admitting and accepting who she really is.

What I Disliked

On, off, on, off. This Sophie and Kate relationship either needs to be on or off. We’re 14 episodes in and I can’t recall how many times we’ve seen the same story pan out. I’m a little bored with this if I’m honest.

Favourite Moment

At the end of the episode, Alice manages once and for all to capture her captor. But he has a better agenda. He’s got Mouse hooked up to a tank containing fear toxin! The very same stuff that Scarecrow uses. This is getting interesting.

Standout Character

Surprisingly Sophie takes it this week for me. She was completely different this week. She held her own, and she did the hardest thing anyone in her situation did, and that is open up about her sexuality to a very religious person, never mind her own mother.

Verdict

An exceptional episode this week. From the very first scene, I was interested. The story progressed further, and each character had a part to play. 8 episodes left of the season, and I can see this getting more explosive as the episodes go.

Rating 9.3/10
