Batwoman “Mad as a Hatter” Review

Season 3 Episode 1 – As Batwoman continues to keep the streets of Gotham safe, Batwing joins in on the action, but Luke quickly realizes he hasn’t quite mastered his suit; as Alice sits hopelessly imprisoned in Arkham, Sophie fully enjoys her freedom.

What I Liked

1. A great opening of the new season. I am glad we’ve gone straight into Batwing, and the suit looks incredible. Him and Ryan just happily destroying multiple guys in one go were entertaining.

2. The new Mad Hatter has made quite an impact quickly, and I’m impressed. As he’s in Alice’s last hideout, he’s recording a message pushing her innocence and 2 guys approach him. He then in turn makes one of them slit the other’s throat whilst smirking at the same time. Just a deep, dark scene.

3. Mad Hatter continues his ruthlessness. This time, he infiltrates Mary’s graduation speech and rolls in the chairman of the university so Mary can take out all of his organs one by one until he dies. The worst thing is, she actually does it too under the influence of Mad Hatter. I’m shocked this is going ahead, usually with The CW it wouldn’t have got to the “cutting” stage.

4. A good fight scene in Arkham between the guards and Ryan. She goes there to break her in order to stop the new Mad Hatter, but the fighting in the show has got a lot better compared to what it was at the beginning of last season. It’s nice to see Ryan coming into her own as a character and not following the usual typical rules that follow with the Bat mantle.

5. I will be honest, I do actually kind of like the idea that Lucius is the AI built into the Batwing suit. This should be interesting moving forward.

What I Disliked

1. I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the direction they plan to go into with Ryan’s biological mother. I just feel like it’s a cheap move and lazy writing. It added further impact to Ryan’s character giving her that ability to actually care more, given how much she cared for her adopted mother.

2. I really wanted more from Batwing, but the suit malfunctioning or him having panic attacks or whatever it is, I hope it’s sorted quickly. I don’t want this somewhat predictable story of him being vulnerable constantly throughout most of the season.

3. Despite Alice helping out, Ryan turns on her and has been playing her all along. She initially promised to let her go then after she sends her back to Arkham. This was just frustrating more than anything. Alice is more entertaining on the outside than the inside, and I feel like now Ryan has done this, the development has taken a huge unnecessary step back for no reason.

Favourite Moment

After Mad Hatter orders the entire room of graduates to kill themselves via strangulation, Alice valiantly stops him from his mind control. She even players Mad Hatter and stabs him in the back. Not bad at all. Alice looks good playing the “hero” gig.

Standout Character

I’m going to give this to the Mad Hatter. Yes, he wasn’t the best Mad Hatter in the world but I give him props this episode. His brutality and lack of care just gave him the potential to be an exceptional Hatter moving forward. The fact he was able to make people kill one another without even a second thought was as brutal as can be.

Verdict

Batwoman’s opening episode gave me mixed vibes. Whilst it did have some exceptional moments, it also had some very poor moments as well, especially considering some of the storylines they have teased in this episode aren’t something I particularly care for.
