Batwoman “Pilot” Review

Season 1 Episode 1 “Kate Kane returns to Gotham when a gang targets her father and her ex-girlfriend, Sophie Moore.”

What Was Good?

1. Five minutes into the episode, I stood up to put my plates away from my tea. As I walked to the kitchen I realized how engaged to the story I already am. Five minutes in and I’m already hooked onto the story. Whilst nothing major has happened, it’s stood excellent storytelling. Especially around Batman, and the cities reaction to that.

2. Something I have missed with the current Arrowverse shows is the backstory drops throughout the episodes. Batwoman’s delivery on these is done extremely well. We learn who Kate Kane is so early on, it also leaves an impact pretty quickly which is always a positive outcome.

3. I assumed throughout the episode that Kate knew Bruce was Batman, she doesn’t. This was a solid scene done right when she discovers the Batcave. Learning Batman’s calculations were incorrect, and was ultimately the cause of Kate’s Mom, and sister was heartbreaking. Especially after going years thinking Batman never tried to save them.

4. Kate, and Bruce had a close relationship, which makes this easier. The Batcave, the suit, it was all incredible. It turns out however, Bruce never stopped looking for the bodies in the crash. Hold out for the Holy Shit moments.

What Was Bad?

After Kate suits up, I was expecting a pure badass moment. It was so poor. She manages to save Sophie, but the leader of the gang gets away. She literally lost her first fight.

Holy Shit Moment

1. You assume that Sophie, and Kate have this relationship that will always rekindle. Yet after the save, it turns out she’s married to another man. It was nothing huge, but Ruby Rose’s acting played it so well, you felt it.

2. The leader of the gang we’ve seen terrorizing Gotham. It turns out, the leader of that gang is in fact, Beth, Kate’s sister. Who is alive and well. I’m already excited for the next episode.

The Verdict

I have to admit, I was incredibly skeptical about this series. The teasers never did anything for me, however this surprised me. A strong start, some fantastic well written story telling. A strong start for Batwoman, that’s for sure.

Rating: 9.8/10
