Batwoman has surprised me on so many levels this season. It’s been exceptional and deserves all the praise in the world from the huge turnaround from season 2.
One of the many things that have helped is the season’s villain in the Joker. We were introduced to Marquis Jet early in the season as Ryan Wilder’s brother but there was a huge hidden agenda to Marquis.
I won’t spoil anything if you haven’t watched the season but if you haven’t then I definitely suggest giving it a watch.
Nick Creegan is our first black Joker on-screen, something I honestly never expected but Nick has blown away audiences with such a masterpiece performance.
During season 2 he’s given all the brilliant signs of the Joker including the laugh, the instability, and unpredictability. I feel like in the latest episode especially, we’re just getting started with Marquis.
We know in the past with the Arrowverse shows, villains tend to only stick around for a season, and then they’re either dead, jailed, or manage to somehow redeem themselves. I hope the executives take a different take here and continue Marquis being the main antagonist in season 4.
There have been some fantastic villains in the Arrowverse such as Deathstroke, Reverse-Flash, Morgan Edge but for me, Nick’s performance as Marquis puts him right near the top with the rest in terms of being a villain. I do believe this isn’t something that should be a one-season thing and then we’re done.
Batwoman has had some shaky sections, but introducing Marquis has been one of the best parts of the show and I’ll honestly be disappointed if next week’s season finale is the last we see of the Joker. Especially considering how scarce it is to actually get a live-action Joker, not to mention one that’s been so incredibly entertaining.
The Joker has so many tricks hidden up his sleeve, seeing what he managed to do to the Black Glove Society alone just shows that there’s still so much to see here. It’s sad that this season only has 13 episodes considering he should have been the focal point from the beginning, but this is the perfect opportunity to truly cement his place as a villain.
We know that when villains are used more through seasons it builds them up better. Take a look at Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, Homelander in The Boys, Jigsaw from The Punisher, or Wilson Fisk from Daredevil.
If a villain proves to do such an amazing job as Nick has done with Marquis then I want more. We know the chemistry between Marquis and Ryan has been on another level so why end it here? Let’s push it along and keep it going, we know it works. I don’t see the need to risk a villain that might not resonate with fans as much when we know that Marquis is just so damn entertaining.
Please, CW. If this hasn’t already been agreed or set up (the finale hasn’t been launched yet so this article may be premature) then make it happen. I need more of this.
