‘Birds of Prey or the Fabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn’ is DC’s answer to a break-up anthem. Jam-packed with female-empowerment and insane but beautiful fight scenes there are many wonderful things to love in DC’s newest romp. However, the film lacked in plot and scrappy writing meant some action felt stiff. Let’s get into it.
The good things are definitely tied to the visuals. The film is totally stunning. It like like a mad, acid-trip filled with harlequin and glitter. Margot Robbie absolutely shines as Harley Quinn and I stand by my suggestion she should have her own series. She does the role so well – it is really a joy to watch.
Furthermore, the soundtrack is brilliant. Much with the film’s predecessor, Suicide Squad, what the film lacks in story is made up in tunes. I don’t think there was one bad song.
However, the story lacked drive and sense. I loved the introduction of new characters like Black Canary and Huntress into the film but I couldn’t bare the forced union between the party. Some of the writing was scatty when it came to normal phrases. Also, the payoff was not satisfying at the film’s conclusion. It felt like there had been a scratch of character development and the rest had been witty banter.
Yet, that is not to say the film is not enjoyable. It is funny in moments and very clever. Also it is a masterclass in writing a character that is both hate-worthy and scary in his own way as Black Mask made my skin crawl.
Overall the movie is worth the watch but it should not have forced the birds of prey to unite. This movie should’ve just been about Harley. It didn’t need the team-up to work and ultimately she could’ve done it alone. DC should have more faith in it’s female characters.
