Season 3 Episode 1 “Jefferson Pierce in the hands of the ASA with his wife Lynn as Agent Odell tightens his grip on the Pierce family, leaving Jennifer abandoned and Freeland without Black Lightning and Thunder. But Anissa secretly defies Odell in her alter ego as Blackbird with the able tactical and technical support of Gambi.”
What Was Good?
01. The episode starts off inside of a facility where meta’s are introducing themselves to someone speaking on a mic. We see 2 metas and a third meta. This meta is no other than Jefferson AKA Black Lightning. He doesn’t look like himself, he’s got a scruffy look and seems out of his mind. This raises so many questions that need to be answered.
02. Apparently the Markovians are already in Freeland and are attacking or kidnapping meta’s to use against the US. In the episode there is a lot of mentions to the Markovians but we don’t actually see any. This supposed war between the US and Markovian’s over meta’s is reminding me of Young Justice Outsiders which makes sense because Black Lightning was a big part of that series.
03. With the Markovians in Freeland and Black Lightning in “witness protection” Gambi has decided to hide Jennifer and Anyssa. Jennifer has some tech which can change of people see her and Anyssa is working in a group to help free meta’s but also doesn’t go by Thunder anymore instead her new code name is Blackbird.
What Was Bad?
01. Since Freeland is no quarantined so no one can leave or enter and Black Lightning is in witness protection the citizens of Freeland are blaming Black Lightning for causing the army to take over the city. Some citizens think he’s dead too. It’s so weird seeing how quickly the public has changed their opinions of Black Lightning after he’s saved the city from Tobias.
02. There is a new commander of the military.. Commander Williams who is also a meta who can duplicate any power of any meta he wants. He seems to be a villain of this season, not the big villain but a villain who I think Thunder will have a showdown with. Commander William is using his force against the police detective to make him do a press conference otherwise he’ll be out of a job, his family will be ruined and he will be in debt.
03. We only saw a small amount of Tobias in this episode. He’s in prison from last season and doesn’t seem to be doing well. He’s gotten old, has a cough and is apparently dying of old age according to him.
Holy Shit Moment
01. Blackbird AKA Thunder intercepts a meta transport to free a bus full of meta’s on there way to be put in camps. She takes out a squad full of military trained personnel. This was awesome to see, Thunder has really come into this hero role well I just wish she wouldn’t just go off and do stuff on her own. She needs to be training Jennifer.
02. Blackbird is taking the meta’s to a weak spot to get out of Freeland when they are attacked by military squads, Blackbird does her best to fight the army but she gets hit by a grenade launcher which puts her unconscious outside of Freeland with seemingly no way back in.
The Verdict
Very mixed start to the season. I really enjoyed the Markovian/US war teases and enjoyed seeing Blackbird take down military squads on her own but i’m not liking how Black Lightning is basically on the side lines for now. Hints of Young Justice Outsiders is cool to see.
