Over the past few years now films have typically had a short run at the box office before going to digital, some sooner than others depending on box office numbers, it all depends on the movie doing well in terms of numbers to decide if they release on digital or not. Some films tend to be released on digital around 45 days or so after a theatre release.
Just over a week from the release of the Borderlands movie in theaters, it’s already scheduled to hit digital platforms, which is such a bad sign as to how badly the movie performed at the box office.
The date for the digital release is August 30, just three weeks after the debut in theaters on August 9.
Currently, the film sits at a 10% on the Tomatometer and 52% on the popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. with reviews ranging from “A video game adaptation that completely misses the mark” to “Needless killing. No plot to speak of. Confusing. Dumb.”
The budget for the film sat at $110-120 million and currently at the time of writing this article, it is sat at a measly $21 million at the worldwide box office.
It’s fair to say even before release, the movie did not do enough to provide fans with the confidence that the movie would do well from miscast actors to boring promotional material. It did not help that even after release the movie continued to hurt itself with scenes that literally show crew members assisting the actors.
It’s fair to say that this is the biggest flop of 2024 and will likely not get any future sequel for the franchise. It comes after the Borderlands 4 video game was announced which in turn, could be affected by the movie’s performance.
