Let's TalkVideo Games

Can Marvel’s Avengers Recover After Reported Losses?

Figures are sceptical as multiple outlets are reported different figures. I’m seeing anywhere between $48m-$68m of loss, with 3 million copies sold worldwide.

To put that into perspective, The Division 1 sold around 10 million copies.

Fans around the world never helped with the sales numbers. People were unhappy with the first trailer which straight off gave the game a bad name, even if it wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be.

I told a lot of people to wait until release before judging the game. That came, and people judged it, badly to say the least.

The game was filled with bugs, repetitive missions, unreplayable campaign, terrible skins, poor microtransactions, two villains only, and many, many more. Of course, like many games, social media runs wild and the game suffers as a result.

I’m not saying none of those comments are not justified because they absolutely are. As much as I do enjoy the odd couple of hours here and there on it, there isn’t much that draws me back in anymore. The delayed DLC never helped either.

The game has been rocky since launch, and when they released a patch fixing over 1,000 issues, it doesn’t bode well for the game. More so the fact they allowed the game to release with that many issues, and in a sense, making the players who bought the game on release beta testers. Especially considering people get paid to play these games to identify issues, plus an actual live beta where many faults were reported, but seemingly never fixed until that patch came out.

So, in the end, am I surprised it’s at a loss? Well, not really.

We have to take a look at the flip side of this despite how poorly the game has done among fans. I can imagine a lot of games will never reach their true potentials around the time Avengers released, considering the next generation of consoles was 2 months away at the time.

I can imagine people who have saved for the consoles will wait for the PS5 to buy games, plus Christmas is around the corner where game sales are astronomical around this time of year.

Do I believe the losses can be recovered in the end? I don’t believe so. Like many games in the past such as Battlefront 2 and No Mans Sky, that reputation seems to stick.

It will keep costing Square Enix money to support the game and new DLC content. If a player base comes back the game could break even, but should a game with an Avengers title slapped on the front really break even? Considering Avengers is one of the most known franchises in the world right now.

What worries me, is that we actually enjoy the game. We understand the issues and we know it’s far from perfect, albeit the potential to be perfect. We fear that because of the ongoing losses, the games support could end, and all the planned DLC could be halted.

I believe if this happened, we should still get Kate Bishop, Clint and Spider-Man which I’m super excited for.

As I mentioned, the game’s got a lot of slack which is deserved, but we have to realise the potential the game has. We know new content is coming, a lot of the bugs are gone as well. We just need that repetitive feel to go, better skins, and additional content. The game could do very well.

I know I’ve had my fair share of digs at the game, but despite it all, I still thoroughly enjoy it. I’m just at the endgame point now, so I’m waiting for the Kate Bishop DLC to come.

I’m intrigued to know your thoughts on the game. Let me know down in the comments below.

Do you enjoy it? Do you hate it? Let us know.
