Look, before we go any further, I am fully aware the sequel trilogy is generally disliked in the grand scheme of things. This is a question I have been asked a number of times, should Disney pull the trigger and make the franchise 10 episodes? After all, it does sound better on paper.
The issue now is that the cast has moved on. John Boyega in particular has been pretty vocal about his part in the trilogy. He also has every right to be disappointed.
The way it looked to me is that during the marketing promotions for Episode 7: The Force Awakens, it leads you to believe that Finn, a First Order Stormtrooper, is force-sensitive and the story will mainly focus on him. It was different and the idea behind it was very well done.
This was even more obvious during Rise of Skywalker where Finn constantly had the urge to tell Rey something but never did. We later learned AFTER the movie was released by the Directors that Finn was force-sensitive and this is what he wanted to speak to Rey about. It’s pathetic. The trilogy should have focused on him.
Personally, I don’t have an issue with Rey. She was annoying in parts but had some great moments, it’s tough to deny that, but she just didn’t fit the bill as a main player in the Jedi universe.
The movie ended with her confirming she’s now called Rey Skywalker. People dick on this but I can go onto a Deed Poll website and change my name for £20 to pretty much anything I wanted. Hell, even I could change my name to Rey Skywalker. So that doesn’t bother me. After all, why would she want to be known as Rey Palpatine?
Nevertheless, she combines the lightsabers which creates an orange saber. The first time we’ve seen the orange color in live-action, I’m not gonna lie, it looked awesome.
The question on top of the original question is that if Episode 10 was even discussed, what would they do, and where would they go? That’s the tricky part. Kylo is dead, Palpatine is dead, and the galaxy is at peace. They could introduce another villain into the mix but I just don’t think it could work.
If they went down the route of Finn being the Jedi then maybe they could have capitalized on a better story. But, they played it way too safe.
The Force Awakens was just A New Hope reboot. The Last Jedi was an absolute mess and Rise of Skywalker had to fix the mess that movie made. I think purely because of that, Episode 10 could never happen if they kept the original cast.
I agree with the majority of the fans that it’s time to move on from the general movies. I’d like to see a movie come after Rise of Skywalker, but maybe 50-100 years after Rey, etc is long gone, but can still tie in, so effectively you could have an episode 10 set so many years after, but still, this wouldn’t really work.
The 9 films have focused on the Skywalker name/family. If we move 50-100 years into the future then it’ll be best to just create a brand new trilogy with fresh characters, villains, and a new type of Sith army. It’s a clean slate then and gives the writer’s board a lot of freedom to work with.
I’d love to see an Old Republic trilogy, or a movie focusing purely on prime Vader, but this is Star Wars. The universe is massive. When you deep dive into the books, shows, and games, there are so many possibilities. The stories are, I’d say endless.
So to answer the question a few people have asked, no, they should leave this alone now.
