This isn’t comic-related, but I thought I’d chime in on my thoughts on the ongoing console wars that have created incredible competition.
For the last 6 years or so, it tends to be all about which console has the better exclusives between PlayStation and Xbox. I own both as I enjoy the exclusives from both sides. However, there are rumors that Xbox exclusives will no longer be tied to the Xbox platform and will be released on PlayStation.
The numbers quoted are that PlayStation outsells Xbox at 3-1, meaning for every 3 PS5s sold, an Xbox Series S/X is sold. This has caused a major rift in the player counts on both consoles.
As it currently stands, Xbox players who are subscribed to Games Pass will receive each exclusive game on day 1. Whilst this is brilliant for the consumer, is it realistically sustainable if numbers aren’t growing as much as Microsoft hopes? As I mentioned, this is just my 2-pence on the idea.
Games Pass was the main reason behind me getting an Xbox. I wanted the console for the exclusives and due to me getting Games Pass free through my mobile phone contract, I never have to pay for any of them. It wrecks PlayStation in that category as PS Extra is still relatively weak in comparison.
Again though, it comes down to sustainability. Granted, Games Pass rakes in billions but when you look at the numbers in which PS Exclusives sell at standard rates, there’s not really a comparison there.
I’m more of a PS fanboy so the idea of Xbox exclusives coming to PS makes me happy but then what’s the point in owning an Xbox if that becomes the case? It would then only go down to a matter of preference on software and/or what your friends play.
If Xbox exclusives were on PS but Sony decided to keep theirs completely exclusive, then you’d just buy a PlayStation and get everything under one console. PC is already getting the odd PS exclusive as well and has access to Games Pass so which way do you go from here?
If you stay with Xbox, you don’t have any exclusivity on the console but miss out on PC/PS exclusives. It’s an odd one to me. I want Xbox to maintain due to competition but it seems like they’re fighting a losing battle here.
On one hand, it makes sense to release their exclusives to drive in more revenue but then what does that do to the console? It loses out ultimately in the end.
The only exclusive game I think should’ve been a cross-platform release was Starfield as this was originally meant to be the case before Microsoft bought Bethesda. I think Xbox needs to keep its exclusives in-house only. This comes from a PS fanboy as I have already mentioned. It just feels like a slap in the face to those who have invested in the console.
