Season 2 Episode 8 “Jane sets out to prove her worth in The Underground; Cliff goes into “dad” mode; Niles devotes a day to Dorothy, who’s finally growing up; Rita embraces her superhero status as The Beekeeper; Vic is forced to confront the real Roni.”
What I Liked
1. Quite an emotional start to the episode. Kay is forced onto a bucket by her father and dropped down into a well. The acting by the young girl was fantastic. She loses her teddy bear as she’s in the well, and it hits hard. Nobody would want to see their child suffer the way she did here.
2. I kind of went in on Cliff for being a terrible father and going about everything in just the wrong way. However, in the opening scenes, you actually see him desperately trying. I really do admire that.
3. I actually agree with Larry in the scene with the recording. Afterwards, he has a pop at the force, desperately trying to explain that he’s tired of his past being shoved in his face. We’re sick of seeing it as well. I just wish this force and Larry would have a strong connection.
4. As Dorothy experiences her first period, the lady at the store was so incredibly helpful. If I ever had a daughter in a position like that where it can be frightening, I’d absolutely love a lady to help out the way she did.
5. The Candlemaker is on the verge of being released. The funfair scenes with Dorothy were great, and I truly believe the Candlemaker is going to be a great villain for the Doom Patrol.
6. Cliff’s reaction to being invited to the wedding. It was such a lovely moment. There isn’t much more to say than that.
What I Disliked
After Roni pretty much kicks Cyborg’s ass, she walks out and Rita shows up. In what looked to be a stand-off, I got so excited for a fight between them. Then…nothing. This episode has been great but that was a letdown. Even if we saw Cyborg actually pull out one of his canons…eventually.
Favourite Moment
Figuring out how twisted the Underground truly is. After the teddy bear is recovered, Miranda throws her into the well. As she’s down there, we multiple other personalities. I have to admit, this story with Jane has really began to interest me from this week.
Standout Character
This week has to go to Jane, Miranda or whoever was at the forefront this week. It gets confusing, I know. The idea of her facing her fears with the well, and doing it so well definitely deserves it this week.
Verdict
One of the better episodes of Doom Patrol. The episode was filled with different emotions. Fear, sadness, joy, betrayal, it had everything. Although there was a lack of action, the rest of the stories made up for themselves. Now the villain has shown his face properly, it’s about to get interesting.
