Doom Patrol “Fun-Size Patrol” Review

Season 2 Episode 1 “Niles, Jane, Cliff, Rita, Vic and Dorothy are still miniature-sized; ultimately, Niles will have to sacrifice something precious to save the team.”

What I Liked

1. A super-strong start to the episode in the circus environment with Ape Faced Girl. The acting and the way she looks is absolutely sublime. As she’s forced to perform in the circus, she’s offered to make a wish and it seems like chaos just ensues, with the Chief injured, but watching on. The decapitated head was just a tad gruesome as well.

2. I do have to give them props on the effects with most of the team being so small. It just feels and looks so real. Special shoutout to Cliff punching a rat across the room, that was brilliant.

3. Cyborg stepping into help Rita was a nice touch. Rita wants to become a superhero, and instead of Cyborg jumping in with the traditional ways, he insults her to make her angry. I can’t wait for her, and Larry to finally be able to fully control their powers.

4. Cliff finally gets to somewhat drive a fast car, which is probably a little Hot Wheels car, but you can see he’s having a great time which is nice to see. One of Dorothy’s friends also comes out when Cliff becomes edgy and almost loses control of the car, and it was weird. As always.

What I Disliked

I do feel like some of the backstories are completely unnecessary now. I think last season we got a LOT of backstory content to the point we fully understand the characters. Whilst I don’t hate these, I just think we should focus on the here and now.

Favourite Moment

I absolutely love the no-nonsense attitude from Cliff. Even after he’s approached by an animal, a huge spider, and a weird thing from earlier – he STILL stands there offering them out for a fight. He gets wiped out with a backhander, but this scene was hilarious, and edgy all at the same time.

Standout Character

I have to give this week to Robotman. He was as always, hilarious. He made me laugh, he battered a mouse and stood up to 3 monsters without hesitation. It was wonderful to watch him have a brief moment of pure happiness when he drove the little car around the track.

Verdict

A fantastic start to the season. It touched base on the new story ark for this season and got around to it very quickly. Each character has their own agendas, whilst fighting for the bigger picture which is always a plus in shows like this. I really enjoyed this week.
