The X-Men are one step closer to finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own movies. Screenwriter Michael Lesslie has been brought on to write the first X-Men movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the franchise was acquired by Disney in 2019.
Obviously, with every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Kevin Feige will be a producer on the film while nothing else has been set for the film from plot, director, or cast. Marvel over the last few years has teased mutants with a brief mention in 2022’s Ms. Marvel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the more important appearance of Charles Xavier in 2022’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Beast within 2023’s The Marvel’s.
With the most recent mutant project being the success of the Disney+ animated series “X-Men ’97”, Marvel Studios has enjoyed some of it’s best reviews in recent years with the release of that animated show as a continuation of the 1990s show.
Michael Lesslie started his career in 2007, with the adaptation of the 1994 film “Swimming With Sharks” as a play, which debuted in London’s West End.
He adapted Shakepeare’s “Macbeth” for director Justin Kurzel’s 2015 feature starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, and then worked again with all three for 2016’s “Assassin’s Creed.”
He executive produced and co-wrote the 2018 BBC/AMC limited series “The Little Drummer Girl,” an adaptation of the John le Carré novel directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Michael Shannon, Alexander Skarsgard, and Florence Pugh.
Lesslie most recently produced and wrote a feature film adaption of “Hamlet” starring Riz Ahmed, Joe Alwyn, Morfydd Clark, and Timothy Spall and directed by Aneil Karia, with more recently co-writing the upcoming “Now You See Me 3”.
