I’ve always thought that the success of the first Avatar movie was always down to releasing around the same time as the 3D technology and that is why it made a bunch of money but oh boy was I wrong.
Recently, an Avatar open-world game was released by Ubisoft. It came in a period of time where I was going through a rough patch in gaming, nothing to play, didn’t have the energy for online games so I went and bought that Avatar game.
I played for around 3-4 hours of the game and I was captivated by the world, the life, the unique sounds, and the animals. More importantly, I was captured by the culture of the Na’vi people that we see in the movies and now in video games.
After playing the game and seeing that the game was actually canon to the movies, I decided to rewatch the first Avatar movie and finally finish the sequel, only restarting it from the beginning with a fresh mind.
My opinions changed quite immediately. I would say for the better too. I found the world, culture, and lore great. I loved the aspect that Earth has been ruined so the Earth people are coming to this world to take control. I loved seeing the Na’vi people fight back and I loved seeing Jake protect and fight for them, and officially becoming one.
The sequel blew my mind. It expanded on the lore that was already set and changed the course of good vs evil within the franchise. It expanded and showcased that Na’vi are more than forest people, there are different types, in this movie, we got to meet the water Na’vi people. This showcased a whole new range of abilities and challenges the forest Na’vi faces.
Honestly, I can not wait for the rest of the movies that James Cameron has been working on. I believe I’ll keep becoming a fan of the franchise too. I no longer believe that the success came from 3D technology, I fully believe that the success came from the great writing, the great directing from James Cameron, and more importantly, the range of acting that the cast delivered.
