I reviewed this game only just a few days ago. Based on the categories that we rate by, it gathered an 8.7. To be honest, upon first reflection it definitely does live up to that rating, but after around 40-50 hours, would I say the same?
Honestly, probably not.
You can see my initial review by clicking here, you can also see some of the dislikes I put into there.
However, now, it goes far past that. I’ll be honest, I’m struggling to believe this game can maintain interest for many years like the game claims it can be – especially after first poor impressions from fans and critics alike.
Understandably, in any game like this such as Destiny, The Division etc, the repetitiveness does prevail. What I will give this game props for is it took longer than those for that issue to come to light.
But, what those games do that this doesn’t give you is a sense of reward. This game is so lacklustre in that department, it’s almost exhausting.
They have SHIELD vault missions, plus others that give you a wide open-source, with a bunch of ?’s dotted around. Which is great in its own right, but the loot given for doing these is so trash it’s unbelievable. I’m not expecting to open a standard chest and get a 5-star legendary item.
Now I just can’t be bothered to chase the ?’s because it’s not just worth the time at all. There’s nothing in those that do anything for me, except maybe 3 or 4 nanotubes or resources as I’ve been ripped off by dismantling the gear.
However, with these vault missions, more so the elite variants. The loot at the end is just not worth it. There are usually 3 chests after you’ve cracked the codes on the door, and the first time you do it the excitement really builds.
It makes sense that it does, you’ve been through a hellish grind to get there, lo and behold…you get nothing. Nada, zilch, zero. It’s pure trash it’s not even comprehensible. One of the groups I play with literally just got some resources and a blue gear piece. This isn’t great for an elite mission nonetheless. I said before with the little ?’s dotted around the map I don’t expect high-quality stuff all the time, sometimes little surprises are nice but with these types of missions, I absolutely do.
That is my biggest issue with the game. It’s the lack of rewarding, and even when you do get rewarded, it just doesn’t feel exciting. The gear doesn’t bring a lot to the table that excites you into going into a new mission to try it out. It just doesn’t, and it sucks.
Another thing that just straight up annoys me, is the push to power level 150. Why do they have to make it so difficult up to that point? I was helping my friends do an iconic mission that was powered at 40, I was 138 and it made a difference, but not a lot.
To be honest, I don’t see the point. They make it relatively easy and a nicer grind up to 140, but then after that, it’s just a daily slugfest to get to 150. It’s pointless, and it can take at least a couple of weeks to level up the exotic artefacts. Just leave it alone.
Moving on from that, with other similar type games there’s always something else to do. With this, once you finish the campaign and Reigning Supreme chain, that’s it. There’s realistically nothing except rehashing the same other missions. Rinse and repeat. Each day you can get a request from the two factions to fight Taskmaster and Abomination. Mostly on the same rooftop. Let me just yawn here for a second.
All of the missions are just the same. Especially the floor levelled ones. What’s even worse is the elite hive one at the end of the Reigning Supreme chain. 14 floors. Single-player. All you did was clear each floor, just redoing the same things you’ve done many times previously, in the same settings as well.
Another thing to make note of is the skins. Some of them are just garbage. Literally belong in the bin. Iron Man’s sets are so bad. Let me quickly leave this here, just very briefly;
They have taken 3 or 4 of those which is fine. They literally added one skin, and I swear there’s probably 4 or 5 different colour versions – of the same suit – twice. They did it with two of the suits. Where’s the effort in it? Look at the picture above closely, they had so much to choose from.
I’m not even going to discuss the bugs, they’re aware of it, they know about it – but, they are taking a seriously long time to sort them out. My Iconic Iron Man suit is still locked, and I swear I’m missing multiple suits. Even the fabrication centre doesn’t work most of the time.
The credits are expensive, so for me, right now, I will not spend any further money on anything. It’s just not worth the price tag for the suits that just barely appeal in anything other than a paint job.
Now, when I’m slamming into the game the way I am it’s because I care. I did actually enjoy the game, and I still somewhat do. In this current state, it’s almost impossible it could hold itself high and stay steady it’s just not going to happen.
They’ve promised many things, and a lot of those promises are yet to be seen. Kate is coming next month, Clint is following in November. Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I was under the impression Clint was meant to be day one? I’m not mad, I’m just hoping it’s not a false promise already.
The game has the potential to be a powerhouse, but it requires a lot of work to get to that point. I feel like it won’t take much to get to that point either.
Put some new missions in, new locations, sort the gear aspect out, add some skins and fix the bugs. I think in doing that they have the structure there to be the perfect game we know it can be.
