Loki “The Variant” Review

Season 1 Episode 2 – Mobius puts Loki to work, but not everyone at the TVA is thrilled about the God of Mischief’s presence.

What I Liked

1. I love the idea that we are about to see Loki try and take himself down. You’ve gotta appreciate the irony considering he’s tried to stop everyone from defeating him, but now he has to try to defeat a variant of himself.

2. You do have to appreciate how complex the character Loki is. This guy somehow has a way to make you forget he has killed god only knows how many innocent people. We are literally watching a variant of Loki killing people in 1985, yet you still have to love the guy.

3. I’m sure Loki sometimes forgets himself that he was a villain. When people doubt him or worry he is going to stab them in the back, it’s almost like he gets confused and wonders why they think that until he eventually remembers everything he has done.

4. 79AD, Loki and Mobius revisit an apocalypse in where a volcano is ready to erupt. They both learn that because an apocalypse is imminent, whatever they then do doesn’t affect the timeline, so obviously, Loki being Loki decides to put it to the test. He tells all the people around him that they’re about to die, it was just hilarious but in such bad taste. After all, it is Loki.

4. I love the duo of Mobius and Loki. Two very great characters are either bickering, mocking one another, being sarcastic, or just straight-up insulting each other. Kinda reminds you of the relationship Loki had with Thor. But I do enjoy seeing these two on-screen together!

What I Disliked

Nothing to report this week.

Favourite Moment

The final scene where the TVA and Loki find the Variant was so intense! I wish we’d have seen Loki use more of his magic but at the same time, it’s quite nice to see him actually fight and not rely on his magic so much! I don’t think Loki is double-crossing the TVA, I do think he’s trying to basically trick his other-self. The reveal wasn’t quite expected as I wasn’t expecting a woman to be the variant, but none the less it was a great scene!

Standout Character

I think it’s only fair to give the standout to Loki. It’s a tricky one because this show is very much focused on him so he is what we are going to see the most of. None the less he does deserve it. I love seeing how complex his character is, even as viewers we always have to wonder if he’s up to his usual tricks.

Verdict

Another amazing episode of Loki! I think one of the great things about this is we have seen so many people try to fight Loki, his brother, his sister, the avengers, and so on, but now he has to fight himself (kinda). I’m excited to see what more is brought to this show.
