Madame Web Set In It’s Own Universe

Madame Web is an upcoming superhero film based on Marvel Comics and will feature Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson), Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced).

The premise of the film is “Cassandra Webb is forced to confront her past while trying to survive with three young women with powerful futures who are being hunted by a deadly adversary.”

Sony continues to build its ever-growing universe of Marvel characters, thus far we have seen Tom Hardy portray Eddie Brock/Venom, Jared Leto as Morbius, and coming up in a few months is Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven the Hunter.

Despite this, however, S.J. Clarkson recently spoke with EW regarding the time period the movie is set in and what universe it falls into. The movie is set in 2003 and went even as far as to mention that this movie is set in a standalone universe, which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion.

Clarkson stated “She’s definitely in a standalone world, I was able to just have free rein and let the movie be what it needed to be, as opposed to trying to force it into something else. That was a gift, in a way, to be able to take something and bring a fresh and I hope original take to it.”

People might dislike this, especially with it being another “Spider-Man movie without Spider-Man” but that is just a dumb sentence. Spider-Man, as seen in the Spider-Verse movies is simply just a name, that many different Spider-related characters use.

I like that this is in a standalone universe, I love it even more that it’s set in 2003. This gives Clarkson the free reign to create a masterpiece of a universe. Sony has the rights to 300+ characters, we will eventually get to see characters we wouldn’t see anywhere else within this universe.

However, this depends on whether the movie does well enough that Sony can see this vision.
