Midnight Suns Probably Won’t Get A Sequel But It Deserves One

Midnight Suns was released in December 2022 and I remember being skeptical about its release. I never gave the game a chance; the “cards” system threw me off.

I half expected a game similar to the XCOM series but looking back on my opinion, I realize I was beyond out of touch. It says something considering I’m a huge Marvel fan as well.

The more I play Midnight Suns, the more I realize there’s no way it could have a system similar to XCOM. Mostly, the soldiers you control within those games are human except the Psy soldiers. There’s no way you can control Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Doctor Strange the same way. A new system was necessary.

I bought the standard edition followed by the seasons pass after 2 hours. The reason I went for the second purchase is because I knew very quickly how wrong I was to judge this game so easily and so early on.

I’m currently on my fourth playthrough and I paused the game to write this article because it came to my thoughts that we probably will never get a sequel but we should.

Besides the Spider-Man games in the Marvel universe (knowing those games are more Sonyverse), Midnight Suns had the best story in the franchise.

The characters were vast and enjoyable, each in their own right.

The gameplay is super addictive.

There’s so much to like about this game yet it goes under the radar. I’ve got a few people into the game recently including my younger brother who had a fantastic time with it. The season pass enhances the experience when you get access to the likes of Deadpool, Storm, Venom & Morbius.

I completely understand the skepticism. The trailers looked fantastic but when you look at someone fighting a battle, it maybe doesn’t look interesting. It’s one of those games you need to be playing yourself.

The game is super rewarding too. The more you take heroes on missions with you, the more powerful they become. There’s so much to do as well. It’s not just a case of starting a mission, playing a card deck, and rinse and repeat.

There are abilities to mod, an outside area to explore, characters to engage with, maintain and grow friendships, upgrade abilities, find new abilities, craft items, decrypt intel and send heroes on their own missions. This is an overview of some of the things you do besides just playing cards.

If there’s a game within the comic book world that deserves a second game, it’s this. In recent years, there have been so many games that have let us down that it reflects poorly on the industry itself. Midnight Suns isn’t one of those. It’s a very specific game, unique in its own right.

I don’t believe this game is for everyone but I do believe if you’re a Marvel fan and like strategy games, this will fit in with you. I’ve advocated for a sequel before and I’m here to do it again. I’d be sad to let a game that was so amazing to begin with, and also a game that has untapped potential be a one-and-done.

I’m seeing frequent Reddit posts asking for a sequel. I hope this continues to be advocated for.

Do you think a sequel would be a good shout? Let me know in the comments below.
