Movie Reviews Revisited

We began Comic Universe in 2019 and since then, we have reviewed a fair share of cinematic released movies. Our first ever being Shazam!

People often look back on our reviews and occasionally believe we’ve been too generous or too harsh on a particular movie. We discussed looking at each movie and seeing if our stance has changed now the movie has been out a while meaning we’ve watched it more than once.

We’ll put these in order, we’ll give you a brief reason, the original review rating then our new rating.

Please note, that our review structure was introduced in 2020 so movies prior to this were rated just be our thoughts. You can read more about the movie review structure here. If you wish to read our official review of the movie, you can do so by clicking the blue text on the original review score.

Shazam!

Release date: April 5th, 2019
Original review: 10/10
New Review: 10/10

Shazam! is a fantastic movie, only let down at the box office due to releasing so close to Endgame. I still stand by that out of all of the DC movies, this was the most entertaining. It was fun, hilarious, and action-packed and it set up the future of this character in many ways. We rated the movie 10/10 on the day and over 3 years later, we still by that, nothing has changed.

Avengers: Endgame

Release date: April 25th, 2019
Original review: 10/10
New Review: 10/10

Personally, I don’t think any superhero movie in the future will ever top what Endgame did. 21 movies came before it, leading up to an epic showdown with Thanos. It had everything. It also had one of the greatest movie moments in cinema history with the portal scene. Endgame was 10/10 and after probably 20+ watches, it still remains a 10/10 movie.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Release date: July 2nd, 2019
Original review: 10/10
New Review: 10/10

Our stance on this movie hasn’t changed. We still rate it 10/10. For me, it set the precedent for moving forward after Endgame. Peter became his own. One of the scenes I loved so much was when Peter broke down to Happy after Happy picked him up from being stranded. This scene is one of the most memorable MCU scenes for me, as it showed just how hard Tony’s death hit home for Peter. Plus, Jake Gyllenhaal is an amazing Mysterio.

Joker

Release date: October 4th, 2019
Original review: 9/10
New Review: 9.6/10
Personally, the review that was originally published, I thought was well written but not a true reflection of the rating. Personally, I’d say this was bang on a 10/10 movie overall in my mind but I have to be fair and give the correct ratings for the sections in the movie. This is why it drops down to a 9.6. Joker was fantastic from start to finish and gave an excellent portrayal of this lunatic of Gotham City.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker

Release date: December 19th, 2019
Original review: 8/10
New Review: 9.4/10

One of our former writers, Perry reviewed Rise of Skywalker on day one rating it 8/10 which is fair. This is one of the movies I wished I reviewed but at the time, the amazing Perry Wyatt got it before us. Rise of Skywalker still remains a very underrated movie for me. It ended in an amazing way and Rey was the most tolerable here. Not to mention I actually didn’t mind the twist with Palpatine if I’m being truthful. Even today the only thing that pissed me off was what they did with Finn, pushing him as a force-sensitive user but never telling us, we had to find out after by the director.

Superman Red Son

Release date: March 8th, 2020
Original review: 9.5/10
New Review: 8.6/10

Superman Red Son was an amazing addition to the long line of animated movies by DC Comics. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, a few things that were wrong with the movie but it was still an entertaining movie. I feel as though a lot of people still pass by this movie with not a thought about it.

Bloodshot

Release date: March 24th, 2020
Original review: 4/10
New Review: 8.1/10

I will admit, I enjoy this movie more so for the action than I do for the story. I will be honest, before Vin Diesel took this character and brought him to the big screen, the only other time I heard of Bloodshot was from Jason David Frank (OG Green Ranger) and his short movies on YouTube. This movie changed that and made me a fan of the character so I can not fault the movie.

Justice League: Dark Apokolips War

Release date: May 11th, 2020
Original review: 10/10
New Review: 8.9/10

I still agree with my original verdict, a great ending to the previous animated films from DC Comics, although I believe this movie has the same fate as Superman Red Son and a lot of people ignore this great movie. From the beginning to the end of this movie I was fully satisfied.

Wonder Woman 1984

Release date: December 25th, 2020
Original review: 9.4/10
New Review: 8.2/10

Wonder Woman’s sequel was nowhere near as great as the first one. It’s a movie that isn’t terrible, it’s good but it’s not perfect. It has flashes of brilliance and Pedro Pascal was a welcomed introduction to the movie. However, on a whole, it could have been so much better, especially the Cheetah character. I do hope the next movie lives up to the hype of the incredible first movie. A decent drop in rating since the official review.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Release date: March 18th, 2021
Original review: 10/10
New Review: 9.1/10

Perhaps the most hyped movie when it was released. Snyder’s Cut of Justice League was a drastic improvement on Joss Whedon’s awful version. Granted, Snyder had more time to make this work with an additional budget, reshoots, etc, it paid off. However, where this band of heroes is now heading is a mess, it lets the movie down. We know WB is pretty much writing all of this off so when you’re watching, it’s different to Avengers where you know the story will progress, but this won’t. Not to mention that WB still put their hand in with some of the scenes. A solid movie that will live down in memory nonetheless.

Godzilla Vs. Kong

Release date: March 31st, 2021
Original review: 8.4/10
New Review: 7.9/10

To be honest, I forgot this movie happened. It feels like this movie was hyped up, it came, and everyone forgot about it. I see no one speaking about this movie as of late, which fits with what my mind is like, I couldn’t tell you what happened in this movie.

Mortal Kombat

Release date: April 23rd, 2021
Original review: 9.6/10
New Review: 9.1/10

Mortal Kombat was a surprise hit among Mortal Kombat veteran fans and even took me for a surprise, I played the games and I knew it could be brutal. I expected this movie to stray away from the game but they literally brought the game to live-action, and to this day, it’s still my favorite game-adapted movie. Also, a sequel is greenlit. I can not wait.

Black Widow

Release date: July 9th, 2021
Original review: 8.3/10
New Review: 6.6/10

Black Widow was a movie we did enjoy first watching. Then after 2 or 3 watches, we realized how poor it was. I think for us here, we got excited because it was the first major Marvel release in a long time due to the COVID pandemic. Black Widow isn’t a fantastic movie and it’s set at the completely wrong time. I still by the fact that the main star of the movie was outshined by Yelena, I also stand by the fact this movie should have been released post-2016 after Captain America: Civil War.

Snake Eyes

Release date: July 25th, 2021
Original review: 9.1/10
New Review: 8.5/10

Another movie that I enjoyed but has slowly gone out of my mind. I still love the character and Henry Golding fully deserves a sequel but I feel like this suffered a similar fate where it arrived, then quickly disappeared. I feel as though a lot of people ignored this movie because it was a “reboot”.

The Suicide Squad

Release date: August 6th, 2021
Original review: 9.3/10
New Review: 9.1/10

The soft reboot/sequel to the disappointing Suicide Squad. James Gunn took a movie that underperformed in terms of opinion with the fans and made a masterpiece, even to the point it created a spinoff with Peacemaker. This just shows that James Gunn’s talent is unmatched. We gave it a 9.3 on release with a 9.1 today, so not a huge difference. The movie is so much fun.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Release date: September 4th, 2021
Original review: 10/10
New Review: 10/10

I don’t need to change the review that Daniel Lewandowski wrote, I agree with everything he wrote. This movie was a movie that a lot of people didn’t truly grasp until they saw it for themselves. Whenever there is a conversation about a great MCU movie, this movie is always in the conversation.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Release date: October 1st, 2021
Original review: 8.2/10
New Review: 8.1/10

I absolutely love what Sony has done with the Venom character. Tom Hardy nails the role so well. However, the sequel didn’t quite perfectly smash it for me. It had spells of brilliance and was a good movie. It fell short as it felt rushed. When you’re dealing with a character like Carnage, you need to give the story plenty of time to adjust. We need to know more about who Carnage is and what his connection is to Venom. We didn’t really get that. It was good but it needed a lot more.

Injustice

Release date: October 9th, 2021
Original review: 8.7/10
New Review: 8/10

Injustice is a story that I’ve asked to be brought to live-action or animated form for a long time so to finally get to see this story played out in another form other than comics or video games was amazing but as always, I think people skip over this movie as they kind of do with all animated films. The story that we got in the animated movie was well done and had some incredible moments.

Eternals

Release date: November 5th, 2021
Original review: 9/10
New Review: 8.1/10

Eternals is a weird one. It was a generally disliked movie but I personally enjoyed it. I didn’t think it was the greatest project Marvel has ever done but they’ve definitely done worse. We did rate this at the time with a 9 out of 10 which, to be honest, was generous looking back. I’ve since watched the movie again and can see the flaws, but even after the flaws, I still don’t believe it was as bad as a lot of people made it out to be. Not to mention the hype really died after so many delays due to COVID.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Release date: December 16th, 2021
Original review: 10/10
New Review: 10/10

This is a film which will stay a 10/10 for a long time. I absolutely loved seeing the movie on release and continue to do so. I’ve watched this movie countless times and each time it delivers greatness. This is literally the most perfected Spider-Man movie of all time and an incredible addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Batman

Release date: March 4th, 2022
Original review: 9.6/10
New Review: 9.6/10

My stance on the movie hasn’t changed a lot simply due to the fact I’ve still only seen the movie once. The point still stands that Robert Pattinson absolutely smashed the role and has gone down as my favorite live-action Batman. The movie was fantastic and I truly cannot wait for it to release on HBO Max so I can watch it again.

Morbius

Release date: April 1st, 2022
Original review: 6.4/10
New Review: 6.2/10

This is a movie I’m not in any rush to see again. While I fully did enjoy the characters of Morbius played by Jared Leto and Matt Smith, I can not skip over the fact that the director went on Twitter to spoil the movie, the story was absolutely ruined compared to previously seen or known about. I hated that the movie showcased some important stuff in the trailers and then went on to cut it out of the movie like more plot surrounded the character of Simon Stroud. Tyrese Gibson was an addition to the movie that I would have liked to see more of.
