Netflix’s “Project Power” Review

Let’s get into it.

I’ll be honest… I didn’t even think this was a movie getting made until I watched a random trailer on Twitter for the movie. I watched the trailer a few times and each time it piqued my curiosity more and more.

The movie follows a drug dealer, a cop, and a former soldier who all end up on the same team trying to stop people from distributing a small pill which gives the user a random superpower for 5 minutes. Not all is what it seems as the pill could either give you a superhero power or could just straight up kill you as seen in a scene in the movie.

Story

The story was great for the most part. It was set in a near-future New Orleans in which people have been distributing a small pill which gives the user a superpower for 5 minutes.

The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a cop who essentially gets fired for taken the pill to “even the playing field” with the criminals who take the pill as they destroy everything, including entire police stations.

Jamie Foxx also stars in the movie as a former soldier named Art or The Major who is stopping people from using the drug trying to get to the people in charge so he can save his daughter from being the cause of the drug.

Dominique Fishback stars as Robin, a drug dealer who’s only selling the pill to make enough money for her mother’s surgery. She gets dragged into this when The Major kills her cousin, Newt.

The final battle sees Jamie Foxx’s character finally show us what his superpower is. We see him take a pill and his power unleashed, the power he has makes everything melt, and be destroyed around him but comes at a great cost… his life as Robin cries, Art’s daughter uses her powers to save him.

Cinematography

Netflix always kills it with its cinematography but Project Power was on another level, from the superpowers to the scenery and the city, everything was just so beautiful and really incredibly done.

Characters

The characters we got introduced to were all standouts in their own right. Dominique Fishback managed to keep up with the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jamie Foxx so I have to give her props for that one.

Jamie Foxx starred as Art aka The Major, a father looking for his daughter and nothing can stop him from doing that. In the movie, you could tell he was very passionate about the movie and if this is any tease for what he’ll be like as Spawn then bring that movie on.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt just makes everything he stars in great whether that be a comedy or a superhero movie. This was no different. I immediately loved his character from the beginning. His powers were great too, Essentially making him bulletproof.

Would I recommend this?

100% yes. The movie was great. The action was superb but the story could have been just a tiny bit better. I hope a sequel is in the works.
