Pennyworth “Pilot” Review

Season 1 episode 1“Former British SAS soldier Alfred Pennyworth forms a security company and goes to work with Bruce Wayne’s billionaire father, Thomas, in 1960s London.”

What Was Good?

1. Straight out the park, I knew the show was set in the UK, I was honestly expecting the posh British accent that less than 1% of the people speak like. Being from England myself, it’s nice to see the actual accents of the cast.

2. Just under 10 minutes we get our first look at Thomas Wayne, also Alfred’s younger personality. In the club Thomas is trying to get his drunken sister home, when her “bodyguards” pull a knife out until Alfred stomps them in a few seconds. He’s really nailed Alfred, and only 10 minutes in, you can see the resemblance, the accent, everything to both Sean Pertwee, and Michael Caine, who have played Alfred previously.

3. The flashbacks are always nice to see, actually showing Alfred in the SAS, how he fought, and the squad he fought with. It shows how brutal he really is.The humour from Alfred shows a lighter tone to what we are used to seeing when he’s the Wayne’s butler. I absolutely love the way Jack Bannon portrays the character.

5. As Esme is kidnapped and forces Alfred to exchange for Thomas, they set him up. The brilliant part of this is, he’s already well prepared for it. Five or six of them show up to kill Alfred, but instead, Alfred and his team just ruins them. The rating of the episode shows when he makes the call to let the blonde woman know her team is “done”, to put it nicely.

6. At the end of the episode after the holy shit moment, Alfred’s parents are held captive in their own home. Literally just the blonde woman and the old creepy guy that followed the child earlier in the episode. All of them, including Esme manage to fight back and take them both out. Alfred’s mother and father here were such a class act, incredible. I will not say more than that but you need to watch it.

What Was Bad?

1. The plot is fairly confusing, you have to really pay attention to understand what is going on. If you don’t know Alfred, and his background, you may struggle to get what is happening. It’s not a massive bad, any episode, especially the first being slow, can put people off before the second episode.

2. Esme is just straight up annoying during this episode. From the chat her and Alfred have in the park, to her meeting his parents, she’s just one of those characters that is on the highest level of being a whinge. I think the relationship has potential, but she’s more annoying me more than anything else 30 minutes in.

She gets taken by the same people trying to kill Thomas, on the plus side, the plot seems to picking up from the first bad. Flipping back to her, this will still count as one, Esme manages to fight, and with an amount of unpredictability, she wins. Then runs into the room where all the big guys are screaming “I’m being captive”. You’d just run out the front door, wouldn’t you? Literally had a home run at that point.

Holy Shit Moment

As he Lord manages to capture Alfred on his rescue mission. Dave Boy walks in to save him, but gets shot by an old woman, until he’s saved by Deon. Alfred again, shows his skill, handcuffed manages to overthrow two guards and find Esme, breaking the old mans neck who has her held. An incredible amount of action in this scene alone, showing how devastating Alfred truly is.

Star Character

It has to go to the starring character of the show, Alfred. As he Lord manages to capture Alfred on his rescue mission. The Verdict

I was one of those that never expected this series to be a hit, at all. This episode blew me away, Jack portrays Alfred in such a clever way, you genuinely believe the character. A lot to take in, but this series has so much potential.

Rating: 8.6/10
