Pennyworth “The Burning Bridge” Review

Season 2 Episode 2 “Alfred’s plans for his departure to America are put on hold when someone close to him is put in danger. Thomas enlists the help of an old foe, Aleister Crowley.”

What I Liked?

1. The episode started off with Martha Kane popping shots off across the road to the Raven Union side of the street. Seems like some time has passed and city streets are now controlled and there is a resistance fighting back.

2. This is where my next few points come from, this was towards the end of the episode. We see Alfred’s mother answer the phone and then 2 masked men barge into her house and kidnap her. They get her to ring Alfred and ask that he comes alone with £20,000 in exchange for his mother.

3. Alfred is waiting on the street corner when a man in a black mask rocks up in a car and demands the money, Alfred refuses and tells the bloke “No Mum, No money”. He clocks Bazza and Dave Boy and tells them to leg it before the masked man returns. He does return this time with someone else in the car, picks up Alfred, and drives off. Alfred being the cocky young man he is baits one of the robbers into showing him his weapon to which Alfred takes and takes the two men hostage and makes them switch places with Bazza and Dave boy.

4. As Alfred is holding the kidnappers at gunpoint, the police arrive with Detective Inspector Aziz and a gunfight ensues and Alfred loses his £20k. Dave boy also gets a graze on his head from a bullet.

What I Disliked?

1. Bett, she’s just walking around with this woman in handcuffs, I don’t know the story with Bett this season but she’s not interesting at all so far. Quite disappointing.

2. The episode pace was unbelievably slow. I hate it. The slow build for one gunfight was bad. I don’t want to wait until the last 10 minutes of the episode for action to kick off.

Favorite Moment

Surprisingly, even though she was in my dislikes, Bett had my favorite moment of the episode other than the ending bit of the episode. She’s running after the woman she’s got in handcuffs when 2 men from the Raven Union approach and try to take them with them, Bett attacks them with a brick and ends up stabbing them in the neck.

Standout Character

Alfred, I think he was the only one to have anything remotely interesting to do in this episode.

The Verdict

Not the greatest of episodes but certainly not the worst. The only thing that saved this episode was the ending with Alfred. The slow build in the episode made for a boring first half of the episode. Alfred was the best part of the episode.
