Pennyworth “The Heavy Crown” Review

Season 2 Episode 1 “A year after the explosive events of last season, England finds itself embroiled in a devastating civil war, with the powerful, neo-fascist Raven Union, led by Lord Harwood threatening to control the entire country. North London remains one of the few resistance holdouts remaining.”

What I Liked?

1. The episode opens with Martha Kane, she’s in a dirty warehouse with someone tied to a chair, she wants some kind of information, she threatens him, threatens his family. She gets what she wants and just as she’s leaving, 2 men barge in spraying weapons, she makes it safely out. Slightly good opening.

2. Thomas Wayne is back in the states, he’s explaining or talking about what has happened with London, what the threat level is. They want him to go back and do another job for them. A quick mention of Arkham Asylum as well, which is always a great nod.

3. Martha and Detective Inspector Aziz go to a club which is managed or looked after by Alfred, he makes his appearance in the episode by stopping 2 people from having a fight and one of them forgot to hand over his weapon, which Alfred quickly dismantles.

4. Alfred is speaking to his mother, he tells her that he has a job outside the city, he also mentions that he wants to leave and he wants her to come with him, to America, he says he can not stay in London, where Esme was murdered, to where he had to kill his own father, she tells Alfred that this reminds her of him. This was a great scene, probably my non-action favorite scene.

5. Alfred is clearly still dealing with what happened last season. We see him in a nightmare scene, where he comes home with some of the soldiers he must have lost in the war, he also speaks with his father, however, his father doesn’t know who he is, asks his name, and mentions that he had a son named “Alfie” but he died.

After doing what they needed, Alfie and the gang are driving back to London when they run into a checkpoint, Dave Boy takes care of it by hanging out the window and shooting a bazooka at the checkpoint, seemingly giving them an opening.

6. Thomas goes to speak with Martha, he wants her to leave before London goes into a full-blown war. They speak and they get close with Martha moving in for the kiss, however, Thomas tells her that he’s engaged, which Martha plays it off but could obviously tell she was hurting.

7. Bet goes back to interview the woman who’s chained up, this time the “gaffer” goes with her, he tells Bet to put the kettle on, and this is when her crazy side comes out as she beats him with the kettle and free’s the woman.

8. The Raven Society has a huge headquarters where they are experimenting with some type of chemical gas. I’m going to assume this is what Alfred would need to stop further into the season.

What I Disliked?

The episode felt like it was going slow, it felt like it really dragged, This isn’t a good thing either, the next episode needs to pick up quickly.

Favorite Moment

There is this man who appears, Didn’t catch his name but he was evil, The Union wanted him so they hired Alfie and his crew to grab him and bring him to them. While they were watching him, the man has someone in a metal cage, torturing him then ended up sticking a knife into his ear.

Standout Character

Pennyworth. He had the better story, better scenes and action.

the Verdict

A very dragged out, slow start to season two of Pennyworth. While the episode had some decent action and good scenes, the episode was really slow, this isn’t a good thing either with it being the first episode of Season Two.
