Remembering the Marvel’s Avengers Game Almost 3 Years Later

This is a game that had all of the potential in the world but decided to go down a route that never made sense from the get-go. The game was marketed as a “service” which means continuous updates and DLC content.

The game’s campaign may have been excellent, but the post-campaign content was lacking. The monotonous and repetitive missions, with the same villain sectors, simply did not offer enough replay value.

Despite the numerous updates and DLC content, the multiplayer section of the game failed to deliver a satisfying experience. Despite dedicating hours to playing, I never experienced the thrill of progression or the excitement of discovering rare items or weapons. Unfortunately, even after grinding for countless hours, I was still left with a feeling of disappointment and a lack of accomplishment.

They even released super hard missions to draw people back in but even these were just too much at times, especially the HIVE missions where you fight floor for floor and cannot die – if you do the mission fails. Even these missions never granted you anything. You feel a sense of relief when it’s over and then it drops down to a feeling of wasted time when you get rewarded nothing.

The introduction of new characters has unfortunately been affected by several factors. While the initial excitement surrounding Hawkeye’s release was palpable, subsequent character introductions have failed to elicit a similar level of enthusiasm. Black Panther’s campaign was lackluster, and follow-up releases were disappointing. Spider-Man’s performance was below average, comparable to a PS1 game, and Lady Thor was too similar to Thor in several ways.

The skins were unsatisfactory and lacked creativity. Specifically, Iron Man, who has an abundance of suits, only had two identical suits with a color swap, which is unoriginal and disappointing.

All in all it’s a shame. The campaign was very well told and could’ve easily gone down that route instead. Square Enix proved with Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel’s Avengers that they don’t fall flat when it comes to the story aspect. They have proved this so this game should’ve remained down the single-player type game and added on from it.

Understandably the developers had a lot of work to do when the backlash hit so it took away from the future content or things that could’ve made the game better but they just didn’t listen. They delayed Spider-Man indefinitely, promised us this huge roadmap and only delivered on probably 20% of it.

I’m disappointed that our feedback wasn’t taken seriously by the developers, and they failed to make the necessary improvements to the game. The indefinite postponement of Spider-Man’s release and the unfulfilled roadmap are unacceptable. Despite the challenges, I understand the reasons, but that doesn’t excuse the lack of progress. Although the game has many flaws, I’d still looking forward to a sequel.

Official support for the game ends on September 30th, 2023 but the game will still be available to play and to buy. March 31st, 2023 was the last update for the game and there will be no further updates or heroes to the game after that. They will also be giving everything that you can buy now for free to players who own the game.

It is nice of Crystal Dynamics to give everything out for free to fans who have played the game but I suspect this is due to the fact nobody is buying anything anyway. They’re giving all of this away to those who own the game so it makes sense they’d try to drive in just a few more sales before they let it go forever. Despite the high hopes of Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix for the game to remain popular for a decade which was their original plan, it was an ambitious goal that I predicted would not be achieved. Regrettably, my prediction was proven correct as the game did not even last for three years before the plug is pulled was announced.

I must say all-in-all that the game did not meet my expectations. Nevertheless, during the Covid pandemic, when we were all confined to our homes due to lockdowns, the game provided me with some much-needed entertainment. As someone who considers themselves a bit of a geek, I was grateful for any diversion.
